An Electronic Dashboard to Monitor Patient Flow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital: Communication of Key Performance Indicators Using the Donabedian Model

Abstract: Efforts to monitoring and managing hospital capacity depend on the ability to extract relevant time-stamped data from electronic medical records and other information technologies. However, the various characterizations of patient flow, cohort decisions, sub-processes, and the diverse stakeholders requiring data visibility create further overlying complexity. We use the Donabedian model to prioritize patient flow metrics and build an electronic dashboard for enabling communication. Ten metrics were identified … Show more

“…Using visual elements such as charts, graphs, and maps, data visualization tools offer an interactive way to see and interpret data trends, outliers, and patterns [24]. The digital dashboard is an electronic platform that aggregates and shows data from various sources, such as databases, locally hosted files, and web services [25]- [27]. E-Dashboards allow management to track their subordinates' key performance indicators (KPIs) by showing historical patterns, actionable data, and real-time information.…”

“…Service improvement projects and metrics typically focus either on single-point interventions, specific periods within the patient journey or a designed subset of patients. Patient flow through hospitals has been investigated in various settings,4–6 often in order to improve throughput in a specific setting such as the ED 7 8. However, hospitals and the multiteam services within them are considered ‘complex systems’ 9.…”

“…Command centers have shown to be effective at coordinating complex interconnected sequences of processes thereby lowering patient journey time and reducing cost (Alhaider et al, 2019;Howell et al, 2008Howell et al, , 2010Kane et al, 2019;Lovett et al, 2016;Martinez et al, 2018;Villa et al, 2014;Yancer et al, 2006). Carilion Clinic, a level I trauma center in Roanoke, VA., has established a patient flow command centerthe Carilion Transfer and Communications Center that led to $1.5 million annual cost savings (Davenport et al, 2018;Morris & Carter, 2015).…”
