An Effort of Mutation Breeding by Oryzalin and Gamma Rays on Wild Raspberry (Rubus sp.) in Cibodas Botanical Garden

Abstract: <p>Currently, Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG) has a domestication programme of wild raspberries (<em>Rubus</em> sp.) from Indonesia mountain forest. One of the activities in the domestication programme is fruit breeding. In order to improve the quality of wild raspberry, two mutagens i.e. chemical (oryzalin) and physical (gamma rays) mutagens were used in the breeding programme. Moreover, seed of wild raspberries from the collection of CBG were used in the programme of mutation breeding.  The … Show more

“…Research related to mutation induction effect on the content of plant secondary metabolite compounds was carried out at Dendrobium officinale (Pham et al, 2019), Solanum bulbocastanum (Caruso et al, 2013), Physalis peruviana L. (Çömlekçioğlu & Özden, 2020), Melissa officinalis (Talei & Fotokian, 2020), Capsicum frutescens (Pliankong et al, 2017), Artemisia cina (Kasmiyati et al, 2020) and Cnidium officinale (Kim et al, 2021). Oryzalin is a safer mutation agent because it does not inhibit the vegetative growth of plants (Surya et al, 2016). Mutation induction using oryzalin in local Tawangmangu stevia plants is expected to increase the diversity of stevia plants with properties different from those of diploid stevia plants.…”

“…Irradiating gamma rays on Phalaenopsis amabilis plantlets that are ready to be acclimatized and getting a radiation dose of 25 Gy (Widiarsih & Dwimahyani, 2013). Surya et al (2016) EMS is of chemical mutagen which can trigger alkylation and is most likely to cause gene mutations (Talebi et al, 2012). According to Li et al (2021), there have been no studies related to mutations caused by chemical mutagens belonging to alkylating agents that cause high heterozygosity in orchids.…”

“…It is also important to genetic improvement of plant species which is achieved by selection, first from population in fields that continued unique genotype fixed by vegetative propagation (Surya et al,2016). Maturity and storage of seed need to be attended correlating to seed quality for seed propagation.…”
