An efficient singlet oxygen generator for chemically pumped iodine lasers

Abstract: The results of a study on improved methods for generating O2(1Δ) are presented. A wetted-column reactor utilizing C12 and a mixed H2O2-NaOH solution as reactants was found to produce 70–80 mmole/s of O2, [50% as O2(1Δ)], with a C12 input of 90–100 mmole/s.

“…Paramagnetism of O 2 (a 1 g ) due to its orbital moment is a base for application of the electron paramagnetic resonance technique for SDO monitoring. This method is most prominent in terms of reliability and accuracy [119,120] but needs apparatus not commonly available. Vacuum absorption spectroscopy is another accurate method.…”

“…The rate constants of homogeneous quenching are given in Table 1. To calculate the quenching rate constant on cylinder waIl we take the formula ki,wEd2p/32fl4 + (2-y')d/2yI/J'1 (9) where d is the diameter, p is the pressure (Torr), D1 is the diffusion constant, V is thegas-kinetic velocity, 1=2•10-is the coefficient of 02 deactivation on glass and y"=0.016 is the coefficient of 02(deactivation on glass.lf p is equal to 1 Torr then D is equal to 174 cm2/s.A kinetic model of gas flow through glass tubes was constructed. All quenching processes mentioned above (5)- (8) where taken into consideration within the model. By means of this model using the data from Fig.3 the 02 content was calculated at SOG output (Z0) taking Z, value measured at any distance x.Thus the value Z60=0.26 corresponds to the value of Z0 at various component concentrations in the (3) process showed that provided H202 is taken in high excess the °2 yield is practically independent on peroxide concentration in SOG; that is in agreement with'°.The 02 molecules yield in the (3) process in reaction mixture itself is close to 100%.…”

“…Quenching of 1* by ICI will grow as ICI accumulates from the chain reactions (8) and (9), but the total rate of 1* decay can nonetheless decrease as reaction (10) More numerical integrations were performed to estimate the magnitude of k l9 required for sensible agreement with our experiments. Reactions (1)-(10), (16), and (19) were included, using rate constants from Table I and the reasonable (but not particularly critical) assumptions that k3 = k 4 ; k5 = k 6 . Simulating conditions comparable to those used to obtain the data of Fig.…”
