In this study, cerium oxide nanorods (CeO2-NRs) were synthesized by using the phytochemicals present in the Dalbergia sissoo extract. The physiochemical characteristics of the as-prepared CeO2-NRs were investigated by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The SEM and UV-VIS analyses revealed that the acquired nanomaterials possessed a rod-like morphology while the XRD results further confirmed that the synthesized NRs exhibited a cubic crystal lattice system. The antioxidant capacity of the synthesized CeO2-NRs was investigated by using several in vitro biochemical assays. It was observed that the synthesized NRs exhibited better antioxidant potential in comparison to the industrial antioxidant of the butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The biochemical assays, including lipid peroxidation (LPO), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and catalase activity (CAT), were also performed in the human lymphocytes incubated with the CeO2-NRs to investigate the impact of the NRs on these oxidative biomarkers. Enhanced reductive capabilities were observed in all the assays, revealing that the NRs possess excellent antioxidant properties. Moreover, the cytotoxic potential of the CeO2-NRs was also investigated with the MTT assay. The CeO2-NRs were found to effectively kill off the cancerous cells (MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line), further indicating that the synthesized NRs exhibit anticancer potential as well. One of the major applications studied for the prepared CeO2-NRs was performing the statistical optimization of the photocatalytic degradation reaction of the methyl orange (MO) dye. The reaction was optimized by using the technique of response surface methodology (RSM). This advanced approach facilitates the development of the predictive model on the basis of central composite design (CCD) for this degradation reaction. The maximum degradation of 99.31% was achieved at the experimental optimized conditions, which corresponded rather well with the predicted percentage degradation values of 99.58%. These results indicate that the developed predictive model can effectively explain the performed experimental reaction. To conclude, the CeO2-NRs exhibited excellent results for multiple applications.

Utilizing ecologically friendly methods to address wastewater concerns is paramount. In this study, we developed novel PANI@(Ce-Er) dual-doped ZnO (PCEZ) nanocomposites using a wet impregnation approach assisted by ultrasound. These composites were thoroughly characterized using XRD, FESEM, EDX, UV-DRS, PL, and Impedance Analyzer techniques to assess their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Structural characterization was conducted to analyze the crystalline behavior and chemical composition of the synthesized samples. UV-DRS and PL spectroscopy were utilized to analyze their optical properties. Compared to PANI alone, the PCEZ heterojunction demonstrated enhanced photocatalytic stability and efficiency. Notably, in neutral media, the PCEZ heterojunction exhibited a significant photodegradation efficiency against methylene blue (MB), achieving approximately to 94.14% degradation. Morphology analysis of the synthesized samples and elemental composition was effectively performed using SEM images and EDX data. The UV-DRS investigation aimed to confirm the active contacts of dopant metals with polyaniline backbone chains and assess the energy band gap, which defines the absorption behavior of the photocatalyst. Kinetic studies of methylene blue degradation were characterized using the Pseudo First-Order relation, with the best adjusted R2 value of 0.9947 observed for 50% w/w (PANI@(Ce-Er)-ZnO). The produced PANI@(Ce-Er) co-doped ZnO nanocomposites show promise as effective photocatalysts for the elimination of methylene blue in aqueous environments.

To address the significant issue of wastewater treatment, this research focused on synthesizing PANI@Ce-doped ZnO (PCZ), a ternary heterojunction with varying dopant concentrations. This heterojunction was prepared using an ultrasonic-assisted wet impregnation technique and underwent comprehensive analysis through several techniques, including XRD, UV-DRS, Photoluminescence, FE-SEM, EDAX, FTIR, and Impedance Analyzer. The synergy between the organic and inorganic frameworks resulted in an additive effect on the photocatalyst's degradation efficiency. This was achieved by enhancing its light-absorption properties and tuning the band gap energy. In the photocatalytic degradation process, reactive oxygen species (ROSs), including O2, OH, and h+, played a crucial role in breaking down MB (Methylene Blue) using the PANI@Ce-doped ZnO nanocomposites. Comparing PANI@Ce-doped ZnO with a 1% Cerium concentration (PCZ1) to its counterparts with different dopant concentrations, PCZ1 exhibited significantly elevated photocatalytic activity. This enhancement can be attributed to the improved transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers, which resulted from the effective formation of a heterojunction between the two components with a large trapping site.
