An Eco-friendly Approach of Cotton Fabric Dyeing with Natural Dye Extracted from Bixa orellana Seeds Employing Different Metallic Mordants

Abstract: The aim of this project work is to study the application of Bixa orellana seed for dyeing of cotton knitted fabric. To satisfy the future demand for an eco-friendly as well as sustainable dyeing of cotton fabric numeric exploration had been performed in this work. Natural dye was extracted by normal water extraction method with caustic soda from raw seed of Bixa orellana. In this experiment commercially scoured-bleached 100% cotton knitted single jersey structure fabric with an areal density of 140 grams per s… Show more

“…The maximum value of 2.97 for the K/S remained within the expected range for this concentration of dye, as also reported by Bueno et al (2020) and Nakpathom et al (2019). The fastness scores for the cotton control fabric ranged from 1.5 to 2.0, indicating low fastness for the dyed fabric, values very close to those reported by Zaman et al (2018). This indicates that not all of the dye present in the fiber is effectively adhered to the fabric, requiring some additional process (washing) for its removal.…”

“…Compared to the results of Ohama's research which carried out dyeing of fabrics with natural dyes from sappan wood using FeSO4 metal mordant where the dyeing results produced a dark lavender color so as quite different from the original red color from sappan wood [5]. Meanwhile, in a study conducted by Zaman who dyed fabrics with natural dyes from kesumba seeds using various metal mordant (FeSO4, FeCl3, and CuSO4) the results of fabric coloring with a light brown final result [16].…”
