An EARLINET Early Warning System for atmospheric aerosol aviation hazards

Abstract:
Abstract. A stand-alone lidar-based method for detecting airborne hazards for aviation in near-real-time (NRT) is presented. A polarization lidar allows for the identification of irregular-shaped particles such as volcanic dust and desert dust. The Single Calculus Chain (SCC) of the European Aerosol Lidar Network (EARLINET) delivers high resolution pre-processed data: the calibrated total attenuated backscatter and the calibrated volume linear depol… Show more

“…There is a need, at stakeholder level, for near-real-time monitoring and early warning systems. These systems could be developed for a region as extensive as Romania with the input of additional data sets from other sources [27]. With the integration of different data sets, information on the size and concentration of the dust particles, the dynamics of the dust plume, its altitude, etc.…”
