“…The taxa assessed in the present work are found within this complex, including the critically endangered C. pinima and P. obscura [103,104] Additionally, Chiropotes satanas and Cebus kaapori-the latter being among the 25 species that are at the highest risk of extinction of the World-can also be found in this region [105,106]. Despite its importance for conservation, the "Gurupi Mosaic" has undergone a dramatic reduction in forest cover due to the significant increase in illegal logging [103].…”

“…Almost three decades have passed since Oren published his "Checklist of the birds of Maranhão, Brazil." During this time, several studies focused on the regional avifauna, covering its different environments, gathering information, and so, adding new records to Oren's (1991) former list (e.g., Olmos and Brito 2007;Soares and Rodrigues 2010;Carvalho et al 2010;Rodrigues et al 2010;Santos et al 2010;Oren and Roma 2011;Lima and Raices 2012;Gonsioroski 2014;Lima et al 2014). In addition, studies aiming to evaluate the environmental impact of great enterprises were performed in the state, and management plans for wildlife conservation were elaborated in the last three decades.…”

“…In Maranhão, we concentrated the field campaigns in the north portion of the Reserva Biológica do Gurupi (Rebio do Gurupi), located in the municipality of Centro Novo do Maranhão (03°15'57"S, 46°42'00"W). The 271.000 ha nature reserve also includes the municipalities of Bom Jardim and São João do Carú (Lima et al, 2014). Field campaigns also took place in other two indigenous territories: the Terra Indígena Alto Turiaçu (TIAT) in Centro Novo do Maranhão (02°54'38"S, 46°24'52"W), and the Terra Indígena Caru (TIC) in Bom Jardim (03°41'59"S, 46°03'16"W).…”
