RESUMENLa Ictiohematología es una herramienta de uso común con fines clínicos en peces de importancia económica, con un menor aporte en la comprensión de la fisiología del organismo en relación con su medio. En este contexto y frente a la escasa información publicada de aspectos hematológicos de condrictios, se propuso caracterizar los leucocitos de la pintarroja Schroederichtys chilensis y determinar los valores de referencia cuantitativos. Se obtuvo sangre de pintarrojas capturadas en la Bahía Coliumo (VIII Región, Chile). En extensiones teñidas con May Grünwald y Giemsa se caracterizó los siguientes leucocitos: linfocitos, granulocitos eosinófilos, granulocitos polimorfonucleares heterófilos, monocitos, blastos y trombocitos. Los leucocitos, en general, presentaron características similares a las descritas en otros peces, destacando la elevada presencia de eosinófilos con gránulos prominentes. Cuantitativamente, se encontraron en el siguiente orden: trombocitos (40-50%) > eosinófilos (15-25%) > linfocitos (18-25%) > heterófilos (5-9%) > monocitos (0-1%) = blastos (0 -1%). En comparación con otros peces, la eosinofilia (la más elevada descrita en peces), produce una distorsión de la fórmula leucocitaria, posiblemente por la presencia de trypanosoma humboldti en la sangre. Los parámetros hematológicos informados son un aporte al conocimiento de la especie y servirán como base comparativa para futuras aplicaciones. ABSTRACTIchthyohematology is a common tool in the clinic analysis of economically important fish, and used less to understand fish physiology in relation to the environment. In this context and because of the scarce information about the condrictian hematology, we characterize the leukocytes of the Chilean catshark Schroederichtys chilensis and determine the quantitative reference values. Blood was obtained from fish caught in Coliumo Bay (VIII Región, Chile). Slides were stained with May Grünwald Gimsa. Lymphocytes, eosinophil granulocytes, heterophils granulocytes, monocytes, blasts and thrombocytes were characterized. The leukocytes show similar characteristics to other fish, emphasizing the high number of eosinophils with big granules. Quantitatively the rank order is: thrombocytes (40-50%) > eosinophils (15-25%) > lymphocytes (18-25) > heterophils (5-9%) > monocytes (0-1%) = blasts (0 -1%). Comparing with other fish, the catshark eosinophilia (the highest reported among fishes) produces a distortion in the differential leukocyte count, probably due to the presence of Trypanosomes in the blood. The hematological parameters here reported are important for the species knowledge and will be useful as a comparative base for future studies.

This study characterized the structure and the morphocytochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural aspects of the head kidney (HK) of the fat snook Centropomus parallelus. The HK is enclosed by a thin capsule of connective tissue, from which fine trabeculae originate and branch into the interior of organ. In the parenchyma, there are aggregates of lymphoid cells containing populations of lymphocytes T immunopositive for CDRO45, in a nodular arrangement, around blood vessels and melano-macrophage centres. Among the cells that constituted these aggregates and surrounded them, were macrophages and monocytes, and their precursors, with strong immunopositivity for CD68, along with cells of the granulocytic lineage in various phases of maturation positive for lysozyme and PAS. Macrophages and chromaffin and interrenal cells are also present. Ultrastructurally, the HK comprises a reticulum-endothelial stroma consisting of endothelial cells, reticulocytes of the fibroblast type and macrophage type and a parenchyma with increased cellularity, principally blood cells of the erythrocytic, granulocytic, lymphocytic, monocytic and thrombocytic series.

The morphogenesis of blood cell lineages in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, from head and trunk kidney and spleen imprints as well as from blood smears of bled and control fish, showed that early maturation stages resembled those in higher vertebrates. The erythroid lineage consisted of the proerythroblast, erythroblasts (basophilic, polychromatic, orthochromic), young erythrocyte and erythrocyte. The rare bilobed erythrocyte seemed to be a cell in apoptosis while old erythrocytes and erythroplastids represented remnants of this process. Maturation stages of neutrophils and basophils encompassed the granuloblast, young progranulocyte, progranulocyte and metagranulocyte. The basophilic lineage was regularly present in kidneys, rare in spleen and absent from blood. It contained large Sudan Black and PAS-negative, water soluble granules and small PAS-positive ones. Lymphocytes with azurophilic granulation occured regularly in kidneys and spleen. Monoblasts and promonocytes in kidneys preceded monocytes. A phagocytic lineage devouring apoptotic blood cell remnants was present in kidneys and spleen. Its youngest identified stage (promacrophage) resembled more a granuloid cell without granules than a monocytoid one. The larger, young macrophages contained a few to several ingestions and the very large mature macrophages were loaded with them. The latter two stages corresponded to cells in melano-macrophage centres (macrophage aggregates). Precursor stages of the thrombocyte were not identified.
