An attribute or tuple timestamping in bitemporal relational databases

Abstract: Abstract:Much of the research on bitemporal databases has focused on the modeling of time-related data with either attribute or tuple timestamping. While the attribute-timestamping approach attaches bitemporal data to attributes, the tuple-timestamping approach splits the object's history into several tuples. Although there have been numerous studies on bitemporal data models, there is no work contrasting these two common approaches in terms of system performance and ease of use. In this paper, we compared int… Show more

“…Snodgrass attached four implicit attributes to each time-varying relation, and presented a corresponding temporal query language [15]. The bitemporal data model, BCDM [1] forms the basis for the Temporal Structured Query Language. The article [17] discusses the standardization of database systems from another angle of view.…”

“…Throughout our investigations into storage efficiency, we will show that the TTHR approach is comparable to the other approaches and it is even better under certain conditions. A similar study for calculating the efficiency of memory storage has been done by Atya in [2], this study compared the Snodgrass model (which is under TTMR-based approach in our study) with Tansel N1NF relational nested model. A study by Noh in [23] has introduced a new platform for modeling temporal database under XMLbased platform.…”

“…The bitemporal conceptual data model (BCDM) is another example of such approach that forms the basis for the temporal structured query language (TSQL) proposed by Jensen [5]. BCDM is based on tuple-timestamping and it uses interval-based timestamping [2].…”

“…On the other hand, bitemporal databases model our changing knowledge of the changing world, hence associate data values with facts and also specify when the facts were valid. There by providing a complete history of data values and their changes [4]. Several temporal data models, which support different dimension of time, are discussed in previous work.…”
