An attempt to control Cameraria ohridella using an attract-and-kill technique

Abstract: This study estimates the efficacy of an attract-and-kill (A&K) technique to control the horse chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae), an invasive insect pest of the horse chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum L. (Hippocastanaceae). The A&K formulation was dispensed as 50 μl droplets of paste-like matrix, containing C. ohridella sex pheromone, (8E,10Z)-tetradeca-8,10-dienal (85% + pure; 0.16% w/w) and a fast acting contact toxicant, pyrocides (94% pure; 6% w/w), appl… Show more

“…There are several options, pheromone traps (Svatoš et al, 1999(Svatoš et al, , 2009Grodner et al, 2008;Sukovata et al, 2011), spraying trees with pesticides (Perju et al, 2004;Kuldová et al, 2015) and injection of trees with insecticides (Měsić et al, 2008;Kobza et al, 2011).…”

“…Insecticide implants in trees, such as Acecap, have proved less useful (Krehan, 1997). Glue bands around the trunk to trap adult moths have proved effective if applied every year (Percival, 2016), but pheromone traps have not been found to reduce damage (Sukovata, Czokajlo, Kolk, Ślusarski, & Jabłoński, 2011).…”

“…This insect pest was listed among the 100 worst invasive species of Europe (Augustin, 2009), and its biology, ecology, physiology, biochemi-stry and effective management are actively studied (Baraniak et al, 2005;Barta, 2018;Holoborodko et al, 2009Holoborodko et al, , 2016Stygar et al, 2010;Rämert et al, 2011;Shupranova et al, 2019). There are known attempts to control the spread of the miner (Kuldová et al, 2007;Sukovata et al, 2011), which unfortunately were not effective enough. Therefore, an alternative approach to the control of miner reproduction using fungal pathogens (entomopathogenic fungi) has been considered in recent years (Schemmer et al, 2016;Barta, 2018).…”
