IntroductionConcrete bridge decks are inherently exposed to harsh environment. They are known to undergo degradation due to numerous distresses, of which the most common are corrosion of reinforcement (caused by ingress of chloride through bulk concrete), freeze-thaw damage, shrinkage cracking (aggravating both corrosion and freeze-thaw problems) and surface scaling due to deicing salts.Recently, high performance concrete (HPC) has become widely utilized in the applications where severe environment leads to premature deterioration. The premise behind the development of HPC was to address the durability issues typical of normal concrete. HPC almost always implies incorporation of mineral admixtures, such as fly ash (FA) or silica fume (SF). These materials are added to concrete for variety of reasons, of which the most important is improvement (compared to plain ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete) of certain durabilityrelated properties. However, there are also some downsides of utilizing them in concrete. For example, fly ash is known to reduce the early age strength and early age resistance to chloride-ion penetration, as well as resistance to salt scaling and carbonation. Furthermore, fly ash concrete has been reported to be fairly sensitive to curing conditions compared to plain cement concrete. The shortcomings of incorporating silica fume, on the other hand, include increased susceptibility to shrinkage cracking and potentially reduced resistance to freezing and thawing.In the view of the aforementioned side effects associated with the use of fly ash or silica fume in binary mixtures, the ternary cementitious systems have been introduced as a potentially viable solution to address those durability issues. Superior properties of this kind of cementitious systems are commonly attributed to so-called synergistic effect taking place when both pozzolanic materials are utilized. The intuitively obvious benefit of the use of OPC/FA/SF mixtures is that the presence of fly ash in concrete compensates for the deficiencies of silica fume, and vice versa. For example, FA offsets the increase in water demand, heat of hydration and alkalinity of pore solution resulting from addition of SF. On the other hand, SF compensates for the low early age strength and sensitivity to curing (with respect to development of both mechanical and durability-related properties of FA concrete). From the economical perspective, a relatively low cost of FA counterbalances higher cost of SF. Although a fairly large amount of research has been conducted to evaluate the properties of ternary cementitious mixtures containing fly ash and silica fume, relatively little was done with the emphasis on the durability-related issues encountered when these binder systems are used in the bridge deck concrete. El número de obras de construcción, remodelación y demolición en las ciudades colombianas aumenta de manera constante como consecuencia del crecimiento y desarrollo socioeconómico de la población urbana. Sin embargo, estas prácticas generan grandes volúme-nes de residuos que en la actualidad se han convertido en un problema de contaminación ambiental en ciudades como Cali (Colombia). La búsqueda de soluciones integrales que permitan un adecuado manejo, gestión y aprovechamiento de los diferentes materiales que componen los residuos de la construcción y demolición (RC&D) era impensable hace algunas dé-cadas. No obstante, hoy día es un desafío apremiante para los diferentes sectores de la sociedad que deben encaminar esfuerzos para encontrar soluciones. En este sentido, este artículo de revisión presenta un aná-lisis sobre la situación actual alrededor de este tema en la ciudad mencionada y propone la generación de acciones de acuerdo con las oportunidades y retos necesarios para alcanzar una gestión total de los RC&D. El análisis de esta problemática podría ayudar a orientar futuras investigaciones sobre el tema, además de promover su prioridad en la agenda pública, generando así las condiciones necesarias para que la actividad del reciclaje de los RC&D se convierta en una posibilidad viable en las ciudades colombianas a partir de la experiencia obtenida. ResumoThis main objective of this research is to evaluate the variability of the mechanical properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and tensile strength) and bond strength of the self-compacting concrete (SCC), with 50 MPa compressive strength at 28 days, varying the maximum aggregate size and the SCC fluidity. The tests were made in 15 x 30 cm concrete cylinders and in beams standardized by Rilem-Ceb-Fib (1973). In agreement with the obtained results, can be concluded that the variability of the self-compacting concrete is small for the modulus of elasticity and for the compressive strength, but the tensile strength presented a significant variability due to the failure mode. About the bond strength, the variability was small showing that the self-compacting concrete is reliable and possesses great potential for use in the civil construction. Keywords: Self-compacting concrete, variability, hardened state, steel-concrete bond, beams, statistical analysis.Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a variabilidade das propriedades mecânicas (resistência à compressão, módulo de elasticidade longitudinal e resistência à tração) e da resistência de aderência do concreto auto-adensável (CAA), com resistência à compressão do concreto de 50 MPa aos 28 dias, variando o tamanho máximo do agregado graúdo e sua fluidez. Os ensaios foram realizados em corposde-prova de 15 x 30 cm e em vigas padronizadas de acordo com o Rilem-Ceb-Fib (1973). De acordo com os resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que a variabilidade do concreto auto-adensável é pequena para o módulo de elasticidade e para a resistência à compressão e grande para a resistência à tração por causa do modo de ruptura do modelo. Com relação à resistência de aderência, a variabilidade foi pequena mostrando que o concreto auto-adensável é material confiável com grande potencial de utilização no mercado da construção civil.Palavras-chave: concreto auto-adensável, variabilidade, estado endurecido, aderência aço-concreto, vigas, análise estatística.
