An assessment of energetic efficiency improvement of existing building envelopes in Italy

Abstract: This paper seeks to remark the importance of sustainable technologies in the façade renewal of existing buildings in order to fit their energetic performance to different climatic inputs, following the new European Energy Standards for energy savings. Technical data and typical examples of upgrading interventions in the direction of the passive solar gaining, natural cooling and other relevant sustainable technologies for building envelopes are presented and critically examined. The energy failure in existing… Show more

“…Existing definitions of DSFs are many and, to some extent, far between [33][34][35][36][37]. For the purpose of this study: The cavity may either act as a thermal buffer zone, as a ventilation channel or, more often, as a combination of the two.…”

“…It is often argued that, as this large stock is to cater for the increase in population, a large proportion end up consuming more energy, thereby negatively affecting the environment [12]. Unfortunately, these buildings are associated with several defects such as cracks [13], corrosion of steel components in old buildings [14], heat losses because of poor insulation [15], highly unclassified [16], high level of air infiltration [17], and leakages [18]. The leakages can be attributed to differences in design and workmanship [19].…”

“…In this case a gas or electric booster is normally used to heat the water. Electric booster may be powered by electricity from PV panels, so renewable energy must be total [6].…”
