An approach for the accurate investigation of full-scale ship boundary layers and wakes

Abstract: Existing recommended practices in the literature do not provide clear and concise guidance for the selection of the most suitable numerical modelling strategy for investigating the boundary layer around a ship at full scale. For example, the International Towing Tank Conference procedure for calculating the nominal wake fields of full-scale ships does not clearly specify which turbulence modelling approach should be used to accurately represent the near-wall flow in the ship's aft region. This paper presents a… Show more

“…If the detection system has the ability to analyze and detect the number density and scale of bubbles, it can resist the false wake of artificial air curtain bombs. According to the authors of [22], it can be seen that the change in bubble number density and scale can be identified by the change in echo intensity and saturation depth of the laser detection system, and the reliability of true and false wake identification can be further improved by combining laser imaging detection. (2) Annular wake interference When the surface ship is captured by the underwater weapon, the surface ship can form a cross wake by turning 270 • to trap the incoming weapon.…”

“…For instance, grid sensitivity studies with the RANS method are addressed in [14], while grid requirements for LES simulations of full-scale ships are discussed in [15]. The choice and implications of the turbulence modelling approach are considered in works such as [16][17][18]. The revision of general guidelines towards full-scale ship performance prediction is suggested in [19], with specific emphasis on the choice of Y+ and Courant number levels.…”
