An approach for developing sensitive design parameter guidelines to reduce the energy requirements of low-rise apartment buildings

Abstract: a b s t r a c tHigh levels of energy consumption in residential buildings and global warming are important issues. Thus the energy performance of buildings should be improved in the early stages of design. This article describes an approach for developing guidelines on sensitive and robust design parameters for the present, the 2020s, the 2050s and the 2080s. Such guidelines can help architects to design low-rise apartment buildings that require less energy for various purposes, such as heating or cooling. The… Show more

“…The findings of the sensitivity analysis performed (see Section 2.1) ( Figure 8) show that the parameters with the greatest influence on thermal comfort-i.e., the highest |SRRCs|-are those related to user behaviour (operational parameters). According to the literature, |SRRC| values over 0.05 [38] or 0.1 [66] are considered relevant. With regards to the geometry, only 'floor height', 'form ratio', 'area of each floor' and orientation ('north axis') can be considered outstanding-with an |SRRC| value over 0.20.…”

“…This procedure, reported by Jentsch et al (2008Jentsch et al ( , 2013 and also used by other researchers (e.g. Invidiata and Ghisi 2016;Kolokotroni et al 2012;Yildiz et al 2012), is based on the HadCM3 A2 experiment which was promoted by the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). As indicated in the CCWorldWeatherGen manual (2013), if the current climate weather file (i.e.…”

“…Thus, the SRRCs are selected as sensitivity indices, since they are fine for non-linear (but monotonic) functions between inputs and outputs. This choice is largely shared in the BPS community [65,66]. In particular, the SRRC provides a measure of how influential a parameter is on an output, based on the effect of moving such parameter away from its expected value while retaining all other parameters constant.…”
