Long distance truck drivers (LDTDs) have been identified as one of the groups at higher risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Understanding how certain social and psychological variables that have a strong theoretical basis contribute to sexual risk behaviour will guide in the implementation process of HIV risk-reduction intervention in the trucking population. In line with the conceptualisation of Information, Motivation and Behavioural skills model, we examined the extent that HIV knowledge, attitude towards condom use, peer support to condom use, perceived vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, and condom use self-efficacy will independently and jointly explain sexual risk behaviours of LDTDs in a haulage company in Lagos, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design was used and 154 drivers with ages ranging from 27 to 68 years (M = 44.03, SD = 8.82) completed copies of a questionnaire comprising demographics and measures of psychological variables. Psychological factors that included HIV knowledge, attitude towards condom use, perceived vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, peer support to condom use, and condom use self-efficacy significantly jointly predicted sexual risk behaviours (R 2 = .59, F(5, 148) = 42.63; p < .05), by accounting for about 59% of the explained variance in sexual risk behaviours. Social factors that included age, number of years of education, number of wives, number of intercourses in the last three months, number of partners apart from primary partners, and number of weeks spent outside home significantly jointly predicted sexual risk behaviour (R 2 = .15, F(6, 147) = 4.39; p < .05) by accounting for about 15% of the explained variance in sexual risk behaviour among the drivers. It is concluded that all the psychological and social factors examined as predictor variables could jointly play important roles in prevention intervention programmes for reducing sexual risk behaviours of LDTDs. Stakeholders should sensitise LDTDs on the need to realise that they are a high-risk group and are more vulnerable to HIV infection; thus, behaviour change is indispensable in their sexual relationships.

A pesar de los esfuerzos realizados por la Comisión Nacional Indonesia para el Sida -Komisi Penanggulanga AIDS-, desde la década de 1990, los programas de prevención y tratamiento del VIH no han logrado controlar el avance de la enfermedad en el país. Este artículo analiza la implementación de los programas llevados a cabo con las waria -travestis femeninos en Indonesia-. Si bien las organizaciones atribuyen la aparición de nuevas infecciones y abandonos de la terapia antirretroviral a la falta de educación y responsabilidad individual entre las waria, el análisis pormenorizado de estas iniciativas revela la existencia de factores estructurales, socioeconómicos y relacionales que inciden en la transmisión del virus y que son pobremente considerados por las entidades promotoras.PALABRAS CLAVE: VIH/Sida, Indonesia, desarrollo, waria, enfoques estructurales The Forgotten Dimensions of HIV Programs Conducted with Waria in Jogjakarta, IndonesiaDespite the great efforts conducted by the Indonesian National AIDS Commission -Komisi Penanggulanga AIDS-since the 1990s, the programs to prevent and treat HIV have failed to effectively control the spread of the disease in the country. This article focuses on HIV programs targeting waria -male-to-female transvestites in Indonesia-. Organizations blame the lack of education and of individual responsibility among waria for the appearance of new diseases and the abandon of the medical treatment. However, analysis reveals that the success of these programs is influenced by strong structural, socioeconomic and relational constrains that are seldom considered by implementing organizations.

Though the HVI/AIDS prevalence rate in The Gambia is one of the lowest in the sub-region, the disease and its associated effects has always been a concern both to the government, non-governmental organizations, professionals, families, communities, development partners, etc. Over the decade a number of studies have been conducted in the areas of its mode of transmission, prevention, impacts, etc. However, there is none on the disease and the mobile population. The young female petty traders in the car parks are assumed to be at high risk of infection due to numerous factors including their contact with highly mobile populations. The purpose of this study was to examine their risk of infection by longdistance drivers. Due to the sensitivity of the topic, only twenty were willing to participate. The study was mainly centered on six fundamental areas namely; level of knowledge of the disease, perception toward the disease, level of knowledge of the causes and modes of transmission of the disease, level of knowledge of the preventive methods, level of knowledge of the disease management and treatment methods, and petty traders relationship with long-distance drivers. Because of limited resources and participants' reluctance to participate during fi rst contact, the study took approximately seven months plus. Well-structured questionnaires were used to collect the data from the participants in three key car parks. The data was presented and analyzed using tables and percentage. The results among others revealed that there is high level of awareness of the disease. However, there is a mixed attitude toward the disease, the most worrisome being some participants seeing it as a punishment from God to the victims. Despite the majority being concern about being positive, they disassociated themselves with the seeking of medical treatment in case of being infected because of the fear of stigma and exclusion. The issue of herbalist being able to treat the disease was highlighted. Intimate relationships which include visitations exist between the young girls and long-distance drivers.
