An application of scanning electron microscopy combined with roentgen microanalysis (SEM-EDS) in canine urolithiasis

Abstract: Urolithiasis is a common diagnostic and therapeutic problem in small-animal veterinary practice. The traditional diagnostic approach usually consists of clinical, radiological and ultrasonographic examination of the patient. The main diagnostic material is still urine sediment, ignoring the fact that presence of crystalluria is not always of pathological significance. In order to establish the most effective therapeutic and preventative strategies, especially in the case of multicomponent stone, it is crucial … Show more

“…The zinc concentration in the samples taken was determined using ICP-OES plasma spectrometer (Varian Vista-MPX; Varian, PaloALto, USA) in the Chemical Laboratory of Multi-elemental Analysis at Wrocław University of Technology, accredited by ILAC-MRA and the Polish Accreditation Centre (PCA) (No AB 696) (Table 1) [22] . The control group (C) and two experimental groups (I and II) were distinguished.…”

“…Sections were dehydrated by washing with ethanol (increasing concentrations from 70 to 100%), followed by xylene and sealed with DPX mounting medium (AquaMed, Poland). Analysis was performed using light microscope (Axio Imager A1, Zeiss) [28] . The 3 µm-thick tissue sections were cut, dewaxed and rehydrated.…”
