An annular ring coupled to a shorted patch

Abstract: A novel broad-band microstrip antenna is presented. The printed configuration consists of a shorted circular patch and a concentric parasitic annular ring. Compared to a conventional microstrip patch, this ensemble is smaller in size with enhanced impedance bandwidth. Both experimental and theoretical impedance behavior and radiation characteristics of the modified patch are considered. Very good agreement between the experiment and the theory was achieved.Index Terms-Microstrip antennas.

“…Annular ring coupled circular patch antennas have been explored previously to enhance the bandwidth of antennas of broadside radiation [7,8] or omnidirectional radiation [2]. In our study, however, the ring is used to form the second magnetic current loop to improve the radiation pattern.…”

“…A detailed analysis in spectral domain by using vector Hankel transform is presented in [3]. Variations of ring-loaded circular patch with shorting post is also presented in [4], where the authors suggest that due to small area of shorted patch, it is possible to excite the TM 11 mode in the ring and thereby utilize the resonances of both the radiators to significantly improve the bandwidth. In [5], an annular-ring loaded square patch is outlined.…”

“…Such an LH material was first realized in 2001 in the microwave region with an array of metallic split-ring resonators [2]. Then the left-handed (LH) materials received substantial attention in the scientific and engineering communities and some theoretical analysis and applications of the LH materials were investigated [3][4][5][6][7]. A planar LH structure formed by loading a host microstrip transmission line with serial capacitors and shunt inductors has also been studied theoretically and experimentally [8 -11].…”

“…In Ref. , a relatively wideband antenna having annular ring coupled to a shorted circular patch has been proposed. The annular ring in this monopole structure has been used to enhance the impedance bandwidth, which is 6.8% at 1.9 GHz with gain of 8.4 dBi.…”
