An analytical model for predicting the stiffness and strength of pinned-joint composite laminates

Abstract: An analytical model to predict bearing failure of pinned-joint composite laminates is proposed. The model combines a mass-spring model to reproduce the joint stiffness and a characteristic curve model to predict bearing damage. When bearing failure was verified at any ply, the corresponding spring element was removed from the model. The accuracy of the analytical model was validated through comparison with experimental results. Analytical model predictions agreed with the load-displacement curves and ultrasoni… Show more

“…Arun et al studied the strength of bolted fasteners and hybrid fasteners under tensile loading for unfilled, TiO 2 and ZnS filled glass fabric reinforced polymer matrix composites. Olmedo et al proposed an analytical model to predict bearing failure of pinned‐joint composite laminates. The model combined a mass‐spring model to reproduce the joint stiffness and a characteristic curve model to predict bearing damage.…”

“…Drilling is an operation commonly required for the mechanical joining of composite components. 1 Induced damage is one of the undesired effects of drilling, mainly due to the use of inadequate cutting parameters or worn drills, and has received extensive attention in the literature. 2 There are numerous studies focused on induced damage during machining of carbon and glass fiber composites, since it is a common cause of component rejection.…”

“…It is essential to determine the failure strength and modes of failures of these pin jointed connections. The main parameters influencing the pin joint design are W/D as well as e/D ratios, which shows the interactions of the pin diameter, D, width, W and distance between the center of the hole to the edge of the FML [4].There are several researches conducted on the composites made up of bolted or pinned joint [5][6][7][8][9]. Zhinan Zhang et al [10] determined the influence of the effect of pin load on the crack growth behaviour in the FML through experimental approach.…”
