An Analysis of Reflections on Researcher Positionality

Abstract: Reflexivity is a central tenet of qualitative research. Engaging in self-reflexive praxis allows researchers to identify areas of tension in the research process that need to be further deconstructed. In this paper, we draw on our collective self-reflective experiences as qualitative health researchers whose scholarship is informed by critical and postcolonial feminist epistemologies to offer some guidance on how to approach the concept of insider versus outsider in the research process. Specifically, we analy… Show more

“…Reflexivity is historically a hallmark of qualitative research because of its critical nature (Lazard & McAvoy, 2020) and offers much insight to qualitative research, which has been noted extensively throughout the literature. Due to its thoughtful and reflective nature, reflexivity is a cornerstone of successful and insightful qualitative work (Olukotun et al., 2021) and can be particularly useful for social and personality psychologists. For example, Wiggington (in Lafrance & Wigginton, 2019, p. 541) discusses the “light‐bulb moment” they had when they became aware of how their own position as researcher was affecting the questions they asked of their participants, noting how this influenced and shaped their assumptions.…”

“…Furthermore, experience as health care professionals and researchers in maternal health informed the outsider role for both authors. Reflexivity was maintained by recording notes on biases and ideas and reflect on social positions of race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and the verbal and nonverbal reactions in a reflective journal throughout the research process ( Olukotun et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Our multiple identities shaped the research process as a whole ( Olukotun et al, 2021 ). Neither the connected positionalities, nor the research process are determined and static, but need to be reflected in all the steps involved ( Malterud, 2001 ; Palaganas et al, 2017 ).…”
