The introduction of urea or thiourea functionality to the macrocycle skeleton represents an alternative way to control conformational dynamics of chiral, polyamines of a figure-shaped periodical structure. Formally highly symmetrical, these macrocycles may adapt diverse conformations, depending on the nature of an amide linker and on a substitution pattern within the aromatic units. The type of heteroatom X in the N−C(�X)−N units present in each vertex of the macrocycle core constitutes the main factor determining the chiroptical properties. In contrast to the urea-containing derivatives, the electronic circular dichroism of thioureas is controlled by the chiral neighborhood closest to the chromophore. The dynamically induced exciton couplet is observed when the biphenyl chromophores are present in the macrocycle core. In the solid state, the seemingly disordered molecules may create ordered networks stabilized by intermolecular S•••halogen, H•••halogen, and S•••H interactions. The presence of two bromine substituents in each aromatic unit in thiourea-derived trianglamine gives rise to a self-sorting phenomenon in the crystal. In solution, this particular macrocycle exists as a dynamic equimolar mixture of two conformational diastereoisomers, differing in the spatial (clockwise and counter clockwise) arrangement of the C−Br bonds. In the crystal lattice, macrocycles of a given handedness assemble into homohelical layers.

This study investigated spin coated thin films of polyphenol oxidase enzyme (PPO) as vapor sensor to detect chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol and toluene. Thin film of enzyme was produced onto a bio-composite (gelatine chitosan) first layer via 5000 rpm spin speed. UV-visible spectroscopy and Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) measurements were carried out to analyze the reproducibility of PPO spun film. It was found that the PPO enzyme can be transferred onto a solid substrate as a solid state thin film form. The sensor films of PPO enzyme were exposed to various VOCs (chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol and toluene) with different fixed concentrations. The sensing responses of PPO thin films versus five vapors were investigated using QCM as the time dependence frequency recording method. The PPO sensor films exhibited high sensitivity and fast responses against all VOCs. But the response rate and magnitude were changed depending on the chemical structure and the molecular size of the analyte vapor. Recorded frequency changes as monitored by QCM technique have been integrated with the Fick’s second law of diffusion to determine the diffusion coefficients of analyte vapors. The results showed that the interaction characteristics between PPO and the analytes can be considered in terms of two main processes which are surface interaction and diffusion. And it was concluded that the formation of these two processes during the interaction depend on the molecular size and functional group of the analytes. These results showed that enzymes can be integrated into vapor sensor system as active layer and are promising for further sensor studies.

Porous cage materials with certain dimensions, sizes, shapes, and functions have been regarded as promising materials for sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and detection process. In contrast to infinite frameworks such as metal‐organic frameworks or covalent organic frameworks, porous cage materials are constructed from discrete molecules containing at least one internal cavity. The well‐defined cavities in porous cage materials provide opportunities for non‐covalent interactions. These interactions can be programmed into the ligand design or supramolecular cage constructing using the cages as building blocks, offering various host‐guest recognition with great selectivity. In this review, we desire to elucidate the fundamental principles governing the design and fabrication of porous cage materials with well‐defined cavities, good solvent processability, and modifiable groups, the applications of these porous cage materials in sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and detection were discussed. The recent advantages of porous cage materials for the analysis process were summarized. We state the potential of these materials and provide an outlook for further application strategies. We expect that this review can inspire interest in the porous cage materials research area for analysis.
