An AI-based Decision Support System for Predicting Mental Health Disorders

Abstract: Approximately one billion individuals suffer from mental health disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety. Mental health professionals use various assessment tools to detect and diagnose these disorders. However, these tools are complex, contain an excessive number of questions, and require a significant amount of time to administer, leading to low participation and completion rates. Additionally, the results obtained from these tools must be analyzed and interpreted manually … Show more

“… 2 However, psychological therapy is a finite and expensive resource that is currently under significant strain, and subclinical depression can often be effectively treated with lifestyle interventions, e-mental health programs, or guided self-help. 31 , 32 The large proportion of subclinical depression in primary care likely increases GPs’ sensitivity when assessing depressive symptom severity and increases the likelihood of psychologist referrals for subclinical depression.…”

“…While AI can offer valuable insights and support in certain diagnostic aspects (Jiang et al., 2017; Kumar et al., 2022), it may struggle to fully capture and incorporate these subjective elements into its algorithms. This limitation can lead to less nuanced diagnoses, especially in areas where human judgement and experience are crucial (Tutun et al., 2023). It may also hinder the AI's adaptation to unique or complex cases that require a deeper understanding of context, patient history, or subtle, unquantifiable symptoms (Kelly et al., 2019).…”

“…This enables proactive measures to prevent or mitigate the onset of disorders. An AI-based decision support system (DSS) has been developed, efficiently detecting and diagnosing various mental disorders ( 38 ). AI algorithms can sift through diverse data sources, such as electronic health records, diagnostic tests, and behavioral patterns, for early detection of mental health disorder signs, allowing timely intervention, and improved prognosis.…”
