An Advanced Multi-Sensor Acousto-Ultrasonic Structural Health Monitoring System: Development and Aerospace Demonstration

Abstract: A key longstanding objective of the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) research community is to enable the embedment of SHM systems in high value assets like aircraft to provide on-demand damage detection and evaluation. As against traditional non-destructive inspection hardware, embedded SHM systems must be compact, lightweight, low-power and sufficiently robust to survive exposure to severe in-flight operating conditions. Typical Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) systems can be bulky, costly and are often infl… Show more

“…Reducing the influence of operating and environmental conditions presents excellent opportunities in industries such as aeronautics, in which significant advances that reduce failures of the SHM system have been generated by solutions such as the reduction in environmental noise during data acquisition through the use of transducers with low-frequency digital-analog converters [46], combined with transmission systems based on fibers that reduce the noise in the transmission [47]. Damage detection and classification approaches that consider the effect of temperature with multivariate analysis are available in the literature.…”

“…Key elements of the design, development and testing of AUSA M + , shown in Figure 1(b), have been outlined elsewhere. 21 The system architecture reported in that study was developed for AU applications and therefore had to be modified to enable simultaneous multi-point interrogation for the AE work in this study. A description of these modifications is beyond the scope of this article.…”

“…In the plan-based maintenance system, inspection on integrity and reliability of key structures such as underframe, side-wall, and end-wall relies on nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques, which includes magnetic inspection, radiographic inspection and so on. However, NDT usually has limitations such as time-consuming, labor-intensive, costconsuming, and most importantly, off-line [1], [2].…”
