An additional younger‐age peak for cancer of the nasopharynx

Abstract: The age distribution of 666 masopharyngeal cancer patients attending the Tata Memorial Hospital, Bombay, during 1941-72 was found to show an additional younger-age peak in the age-group 13-22. The peak was found in both sexes, in different communnities, at two time periods and in histologically proved cases. One hundred cases of nasopharyngeal lymphosarcoma showed no deviation from a uniform age distribution. Pooled incidence data for 48 population groups showed the peak in the age-group 15-19 for males and in… Show more

“…Race was a second variation compared to the literature; most of the patients were Caucasian, and there were no patients of Asian origin. 12,13 These findings coincide with those of the National Cancer Institute (USA), showing a higher incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinomas in young adult Caucasians and Afro-Americans compared to Asian patients. 14 Tobacco and alcohol are relevant etiological factors in upper digestive airways.…”

“…While the existence of a "middle aged" peak is consistent with findings in the literature, the existence and significance of a second peak at an earlier age is more speculative. Second smaller peaks have been reported for patient populations in Bombay, India, 13-22 years; 6 Puerto Rico, 20-24 years; 7 and Tunisia, 10-19 years. 8 The geographic distribution of referred cases of nasopharyngeal cancer to KFSH should not necessarily be interpreted as an indication of geographic variation in the incidence of the disease.…”

“…NPC is uncommon in the Indian subcontinent except in the Northeastern part of the country [9]. The incidence of NPC is low in Indians (\1 per 100,000 per year) [10], with young age peak in second decade [11] both of which are comparable to UK [1].…”

“…The age distribution is similar in both genders. The incidence rates in male populations are commonly two to three fold that of female populations [2,4,[11][12][13].…”
