Amyloidosis – Incidence and Early Risk Factors in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: In a 15-year follow-up examination, reactive secondary amyloidosis (RSA) was found by subcutaneous fat biopsy in six out of 74 still living patients (8.1%) of an original population of 102 with erosive and seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Five of the 24 deceased patients had had RSA. Thus the 15-year incidence of RSA in RA was at least 10.9% (11/102). To study early prognostic aspects of RSA, comparison was made of 14 entry variables and the initial treatment in the RSA group (n = 11) and the control gr… Show more

“…Our frequency was 7.1% among a group of patients with long disease duration and high anatomical class. Some reports suggested that the patients with AA amyloidosis had laboratory signs of inflammatory process, with significantly increased plasma levels of acute-phase proteins, such as CRP, a 1 -antitrypsin and orthomucoid haptoglobin [15,16]. In our patients with amyloidosis, 87.3% (62/71) had abnormal ESR, 97.2% (69/71) had elevated CRP and 94.4% (67/71) had elevated sialic acid.…”

“…Chronic inflammatory diseases may be complicated by the development of secondary amyloidosis (SA) [8]. In Finnish patients, the 15-year incidence of SA in RA is at least 11% [9]. This type of amyloid is derived from serum amyloid A precursor, which is produced as a part of the acute-phase response.…”
