Amygdala substructure volumes in Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract: Highlights MDD is associated with larger right sided medial nuclei amygdala volumes. MDD is associated with increased right:left whole and substructural volume ratios. MDD cortisol inversely correlated with left corticoamygdaloid transition area. The study implies the potential importance of amygdala substructure volumes in MDD.

“…It is established that the limbic system and specifically the amygdala (104,105) are important transdiagnostic nodes in the therapeutic modulation of negative-positive valence systems. Hyper-reactivity of the amygdala is associated with negative processing/affectivity and an attentional bias to negative valenced information, which can occur across a range of stress related disorders, such as depression and various anxiety disorders (106)(107)(108)(109).…”

“…Their results indicate that volumetric decline was associated with the severity of major depression. Roddy et al (2021) also demonstrated volumetric differences between patients with major depression disorder and healthy controls. They reported differences in the volume of individual nuclei (e.g., right medial nucleus) as well as differences in left-right volume ratio.…”

“…Por otra parte, en la investigación volúmenes de la subestructura de la amígdala, en el trastorno depresivo mayor, Roddy et al (2021) indican que el papel de la amígdala en la experiencia de los estados emocionales y el estrés está bien establecido. Las conexiones de la amígdala al hipotálamo activan el eje hipotalámico-pituitario-suprarrenal (HPA) y la respuesta del cortisol.…”
