Abstract

Shoulder range of motion in handball athletes ABSTRACTStudies showed increase external rotation (ER) and losses of internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM) in dominant compared to non-dominant shoulder in overhead sports; however fewer studies investigated this variables in handball players. The aim of this study was to investigate shoulder ER and IR in handball players comparing dominant and non-dominant shoulders. Forty-six juvenile (n=22) and adult (n=24) male handball athletes were evaluated with goniometer for shoulder rotation ROM. In both evaluated categories, dominant shoulder presented lower values for IR compared to non-dominant shoulder. Even with this difference, those values were lower than the clinically significant. For ER, only juvenile athletes presented higher values in dominant shoulder. This study identified reduce dominant IR ROM in handball players, however IR deficit values were not clinically or funcionatly relevant.Descriptors: Shoulder, Range of motion, Athletes.
