“…1 (Hoffmann, 1918) or before (Pierrot-Deseilligny, Lacert & Cathala, 1971) voluntary contraction of the pretibial flexors is well-known. This inhibition is probably due in part to the activation of reciprocal Ia inhibition (Tanaka, 1974), although presynaptic inhibition of soleus Ia fibres by the Ia discharge from pretibial flexors has also been postulated to contribute to it (Gottlieb, Agarwal & Stark, 1970;Pierrot-Deseilligny & Lacert, 1973). Regardless of its mechanism, this inhibition of the soleus H reflex contributes to the decrease in the H' test reflex illustrated in Fig.…”

“…The mechanisms of this inhibition are attributed to Ia inhibition and presynaptic inhibition, activated by a central descending motor command (Crone and Nielsen, 1989b). Reduced inhibition of the soleus H-reflex at the onset of dorsiflexion in spastic patients has been reported (Boorman et al, 1996;Pierrot-Deseilligny and Lacert, 1973;Kagamihara and Tanaka, 1996;Morita et al, 2001). Morita et al (2001) reported that reduced inhibition at the onset of movement in patients with spastic multiple sclerosis was due to abnormal regulation of Ia inhibition and presynaptic inhibition by a central descending command.…”

“…H reflex testing provides an indirect measure of the excitability levels of alpha motoneurons, since the amplitude of the H wave is directly proportional to the number of motoneurons activated. Recent developments in H reflex testing methods have made it possible to study, in man, mechanisms involved in reciprocal inhibition, Renshaw cell inhibition and presynaptic inhibition (Pierrot-Deseilligny and Lacert 1973, Tanaka 1974, Pierrot-Deseilligny et al 1983, Crone et al 1987, Hultborn et al 1987.…”
