A well‐replicated decadal‐term (2005–2014) stomach content data set was analysed in order to infer inter‐annual fluctuations in the diet of the Argentine hake, Merluccius hubbsi, an opportunistic predator in the San Jorge Gulf (SJG) ecosystem in the Southwest Atlantic. Ten research cruises were carried out each year during January from 2005 to 2014. A total of 18,461 specimens of Me. hubbsi was analysed, of which 6,777 (36.71%) contained food in their stomachs. The diet of Me. hubbsi changed markedly from 2011 onwards, with much greater consumption of the lobster krill Munida gregaria compared to the years before 2011. The frequency of occurrence (%F) of Mu. gregaria in the stomach contents of Argentine hake increased from the year 2009 onwards, most noticeably since 2011, and mostly over the southern region of the SJG. The main predators of Mu. gregaria in the SJG are two species of teleost fish (pink cusk eel, Genypterus blacodes, Argentine seabass, Acanthistius brasilianus) and three Rajidae skates (Zearaja chilensis, Psammobatis spp. and Sympterygia bonapartii), which exhibited decreased catches in the years analysed. The increased consumption of Mu. gregaria by Me. hubbsi, coupled with decreased trends in abundance of the main predators of the lobster krill during the last decade, indicate that top‐down trophic dynamic control occurs in the SJG ecosystem.

The mid‐shelf front (MSF) of the Buenos Aires province continental shelf in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean plays a central role in the pelagic ecosystem of the region acting as the main spring reproductive area for the northern population of the Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita and supporting high concentrations of chlorophyll as well as zooplankton, the main food of anchovy. To investigate the influence of environmental variability on the reproductive success of E. anchoita, we analyzed a 13‐yr time series (1997–2009) of environmental data at MSF including chlorophyll dynamics, as well as zooplankton composition and abundance, ichthyoplankton distributions, and recruitment of E. anchoita. Spring chlorophyll concentrations showed high interannual variability and were mainly influenced by changes in water temperature and vertical stratification, which in turn control nutrient supply to the surface. Chlorophyll dynamics (magnitude, timing, and duration of the spring bloom) explained most of the variability observed in E. anchoita recruitment, most likely via fluctuations in the availability of adequate food for the larvae. Our results suggest that satellite ocean color products can be valuable tools for understanding variability in ecosystem dynamics and its effects on the recruitment of fish.

The coastal and oceanic waters around the South American coasts provide rich foraging grounds for breeding and wintering seabirds, but there is growing concern that climate change will provide additional pressures to the seabirds around South America. As in many other coastal ecosystems, seabirds around South America are already faced with threats to their breeding habitats such as human disturbance and introduced predators, and threats at sea such as persistent pollutants and pesticides and direct mortality risks due to fisheries and oil spills. The sensitivity of South American marine ecosystems to ocean climate anomalies is well known from the dramatic population collapses caused by El Niñ o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. However, longer-term climate change effects have been explored less often and few long-term data sets exist for South American seabirds. Seven Large Marine Ecosystems (LME) border South America. While all LMEs experienced warming during the last 50 years, their climate dynamics have differed in recent decades. Climate models suggest that potential climate change effects may be important, especially due to changes in ENSO intensity and frequency and associated changes in the ocean climate of Atlantic and Pacific marine ecosystems. In this review, we found that the best studied seabird communities are those of the Patagonian Shelf and the Humboldt Current, but overall, our knowledge on climate effects on South American seabirds is scarce.
