La serranía de San Lucas (Colombia) se considera de alto valor para la conservación de la biodiversidad, pero poco se sabe sobre su fauna. Entre finales de 2016 (lluvias) e inicios de 2017 (seca) se realizaron dos salidas de campo para caracterizar la fauna de anfibios y estimar su diversidad taxonómica en el río Cimitarra, al sur de esta serranía. Como resultado, se registraron 183 individuos pertenecientes a 23 especies, 15 géneros y 8 familias. Aunque la riqueza no difirió entre temporadas, la diversidad fue casi el doble en temporada seca que en la de lluvia, siendo el bosque natural fragmentado la cobertura más diversa con 14,2 especies (q1). La composición de anfibios fue diferente entre temporadas y coberturas, con altos valores de diversidad β debido principalmente al anidamiento en el ensamblaje. Los anfibios del río Cimitarra muestran un patrón de similitud con otras localidades dependiendo de su distancia geográfica. Estos resultados contribuyen con información para ser comparada con la diversidad de anfibios en áreas más intervenidas del Magdalena Medio y el bosque húmedo en general. Sin embargo, se debe analizar la dinámica espaciotemporal de los anfibios en una escala de tiempo mayor y evaluar las variaciones interanuales.

Rheobates is endemic to Colombia and is restricted to small streams and ponds at midelevation sites and is commonly found between 1000 m and 2400 m ( [26,27]; minimum and maximum elevations are 250 m and 2520 m, respectively). The complex topography of the species-rich northern Andes creates heterogeneous environmental landscapes that are hypothesized to have promoted population fragmentation and diversification by processes such as vicariance or local adaptation. Previous phylogenetic work on the palm rocket frog (Anura: Aromobatidae: Rheobates spp.), endemic to midelevation forests of Colombia, suggested that valleys were important in promoting divergence between lineages. In this study, we first evaluated previous hypotheses of species-level diversity, then fitted an isolation-with-migration (IM) historical demographic model, and tested two landscape genetic models to explain genetic divergence within Rheobates: isolation by distance and isolation by environment. The data consisted of two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes from 24 samples covering most of the geographic range of the genus. Species delimitation by Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography recovered five highly divergent genetic lineages within Rheobates, among which few to no migrants are exchanged according to IM. We found that isolation by environment provided the only variable significantly correlated with genetic distances for both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, suggesting that local adaptation may have a role in driving the genetic divergence within this frog genus. Thus, genetic divergence in Rheobates may be driven more by variation among the local environments where these frogs live rather than by geographic distance.

Previous phylogenetic work on the Palm Rocket Frog (Anura: Aromobatidae: Rheobates spp.), endemic to mid-elevation forests of Colombia, suggested valleys were important in promoting divergence between lineages. In this study, we use a spatially, multi-locus population genetic approach of two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes from 25 samples representing the complete geographic range of the genus to delimit species and test for landscape effects on genetic divergence within Rheobates. We tested three landscape genetic models: isolation by distance, isolation by resistance, and isolation by environment. Bayesian species delimitation (BPP) and a Poisson Tree Process (PTP) model both recovered five highly divergent genetic lineages within Rheobates, rather than the three inferred in a previous study. We found that an isolation by environment provided the only variable significantly correlated with genetic distances for both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, suggesting that local adaptation may have a role driving the genetic divergence within this genus of frogs. Thus, genetic divergence in Rheobates may be driven by the local environments where these frogs live, even more so that by the environmental characteristics of the intervening regions among populations (i.e., geographic barriers).
