Populations of amphibians are experiencing severe declines worldwide. One group with the most catastrophic declines is the Neotropical genus Atelopus (Anura: Bufonidae). Many species of Atelopus have not been seen for decades and all eight Central American species are considered “Critically Endangered”, three of them very likely extinct. Nonetheless, the taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeographic history of Central American Atelopus are still poorly known. In this study, the phylogenetic relationships among seven of the eight described species in Central America were inferred based on mitochondrial DNA sequences from 103 individuals, including decades-old museum samples and two likely extinct species, plus ten South American species. Among Central American samples, we discovered two candidate species that should be incorporated into conservation programs. Phylogenetic inference revealed a ladderized topology, placing species geographically furthest from South America more nested in the tree. Model-based ancestral area estimation supported either one or two colonization events from South America. Relaxed-clock analysis of divergence times indicated that Atelopus colonized Central America prior to 4 million years ago (Ma), supporting a slightly older than traditional date for the closure of the Isthmus. This study highlights the invaluable role of museum collections in documenting past biodiversity, and these results could guide future conservation efforts. We describe a new sphaerodactylid lizard of the genus Gonatodes from the western flank of the Cordillera Oriental, Santander Department, Colombia based on morphological and molecular data. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by having a medium body size, by the absence of both a supraciliary spine and of clusters of distinctly enlarged conical scales on the sides and by having a subcaudal scale pattern (1’1”) and a cryptic dorsal color pattern in both sexes. Additionally, we describe for the first time the hemipenial morphology for a species of the genus. The new species increases the number of Gonatodes known from Colombia to eight and is the only known species of the country, as well as the second known mainland species of the genus not exhibiting sexual dichromatism.
The complex topography of the species-rich northern Andes creates heterogeneous environmental landscapes that are hypothesized to have promoted population fragmentation and diversification by vicariance, gradients and/or the adaptation of species. Previous phylogenetic work on the Palm Rocket Frog (Anura: Aromobatidae: Rheobates spp.), endemic to mid-elevation forests of Colombia, suggested valleys were important in promoting divergence between lineages. In this study, we use a spatially, multi-locus population genetic approach of two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes from 25 samples representing the complete geographic range of the genus to delimit species and test for landscape effects on genetic divergence within Rheobates. We tested three landscape genetic models: isolation by distance, isolation by resistance, and isolation by environment. Bayesian species delimitation (BPP) and a Poisson Tree Process (PTP) model both recovered five highly divergent genetic lineages within Rheobates, rather than the three inferred in a previous study. We found that an isolation by environment provided the only variable significantly correlated with genetic distances for both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, suggesting that local adaptation may have a role driving the genetic divergence within this genus of frogs. Thus, genetic divergence in Rheobates may be driven by the local environments where these frogs live, even more so that by the environmental characteristics of the intervening regions among populations (i.e., geographic barriers).
