Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae Rafinesque, 1815 and Hylodidae Günther, 1858: distribution extension and new records for Santa Catarina, southern Brazil

Abstract: Abstract:In the present study we report new records of the anurans Hypsiboas curupi, Scinax littoralis, Dendropsophus elegans, and Crossodactylus schmidti for the state of Santa Catarina. These records expand the geographic distribution currently known for these species and contribute for the knowledge of the southern Brazilian anuran fauna.

“…Small population sizes are apparently more common in stream-dwelling amphibians in the Atlantic Forest (Almeida-Gomes et al, 2014) than in species in lentic habitat. The population in this study is one of the few currently known in Brazil (see Iop et al, 2009;Lucas and Marocco, 2011;Lucas and Garcia, 2011;Lipinski et al, 2012;Bastiani and Lucas, 2013). Fragmentation and isolation of the interior Atlantic Forest, expansion of hydroelectric projects in the region, and land and soil conversion for agricultural (Câmara, 2003;Bonai et al, 2009;Ternus et al, 2011) and silvicultural projects (Machado et al, 2012) may promote isolation of H. curupi populations.…”

“…Some species of this group have been recently described ; Antunes et al, 2008;Kwet, 2008), and difficulty with species identification suggests a complex taxonomy. Ecological aspects of H. curupi are not well described, and data are limited to descriptions of larvae, adult (male) vocalization , geographical distribution (Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2008;Iop et al, 2009;Lucas and Garcia, 2011;Zanella et al, 2012), behavior (Lipinski et al, 2012) and infectious diseases (Preuss et al, 2015). Hypsiboas curupi populations in Brazil are categorized as "vulnerable" according to the Official List of Brazilian Species Fauna Threatened by Extinction (MMA, 2014), and "endangered" by the List of Species of Threatened Fauna of Santa Catarina State (CONSEMA, 2011).…”

“…In Santa Catarina, little is known about species richness and geographical distribution of frogs due to the paucity of studies related to the subject (Garcia et al 2008;Lucas 2008). Most previous research has been concentrated in the western part of the state (Bastiani et al 2012;Bastiani & Lucas 2013;Lingnau 2009;Lucas & Fortes 2008;Lucas & Garcia 2011;Lucas & Marocco 2011) and near the central coast (Garcia 1996;Garcia & Vinciprova 1998;Garcia et al 2003;Kwet 2006). A new species was recently described, as well, from the state (Bruschi et al 2014).…”

“…In the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, this species has been found in Parque do Turvo (Derrubadas municipality; Iop et al 2009) and Parque Natural Municipal de Sertão (Sertão municipality; Zanella et al 2012). Elsewhere in Brazil, this species is known from the state of Santa Catarina at São Miguel do Oeste, Caxambú do Sul, Ponte Serrada, and Concórdia (Lucas & Garcia 2011).…”
