Levamisole is the most common adulterant found in cocaine samples and its electrochemical determination in cocaine seized samples is a challenge due to peak overlapping with cocaine. Herein, we propose a deconvolution procedure for levamisole determination in seized cocaine samples using screen‐printed carbon electrodes (SPE). Square‐wave voltammetry in 0.04 mol L−1 Britton Robinson buffered solution (pH 8.0) was selected in combination with optimized SWV parameters (f=8 s−1, a=10 mV and ΔEs=1 mV) to result in the best peak resolution to apply the deconvolution procedure. Deconvoluted responses of levamisole in the presence of cocaine were similar to untreated signals of standard levamisole solutions in absence of cocaine. A linear response was obtained in the range of 20–100 μmol L−1 (r=0.995). The results obtained for the analysis of a seized cocaine sample was statistically similar to that obtained by gas chromatography. Other adulterants found in cocaine street samples (paracetamol, glucose, phenacetin, caffeine, boric acid and lidocaine) did not affect the treated of voltammetric responses of levamisole. A pharmaceutical sample containing levamisole was also analyzed on SPEs and a recovery of 93±2 % was obtained (no deconvolution required for this sample), showing great applicability of SPEs for forensic and pharmaceutical analyses.

The several outstanding properties of boron‐doped diamond electrodes (BDDEs) have allowed their application for various purposes, among them electrochemical sensing. However, the electrochemical response of many redox species on BDDEs can be strongly dependent on whether their surfaces are predominantly hydrogen‐ (HT) or oxygen‐terminated (OT). Fortuitously, electrochemical pretreatments themselves can be used to enrich in situ the BDEE surface in one or the other type of termination. The surface of a cathodically pretreated BBDE (CPT‐BDDE) becomes enriched in HTs, whereas that of an anodically pretreated BDDE (APT‐BDEE) becomes enriched in OTs. Thus, when suitable, the electrochemical activity of a BDDE for a given analyte may be tuned by electrochemical pretreatments, yielding enhanced sensing properties. The main purpose of this review is the compilation and discussion of papers published after 2009 reporting on electroanalytical applications based on a CPT‐BDDE or an APT‐BDDE. Procedures to perform proper electrochemical pretreatments are also discussed.

The chemical stability and electrocatalytic properties of boron‐doped diamond (BDD) electrodes give rise to various applications. While wastewater treatment is the most widely studied field, the use of BDD for soil remediation and environmental sensing is currently investigated more and more. With regards to soil remediation, promising results have been reported for the treatment of soil washing solutions. Anodic oxidation using BDD at high current density allows high mineralization rates of biorefractory soil pollutants and extracting agents to be reached. At low current density, selective degradation of target pollutants has been achieved, thus allowing the reuse of extracting agents for further soil washing steps. BDD‐based electrochemical sensors have been studied for chemical oxygen demand determination, pesticide/pharmaceutical detection as well as other applications such as pH, O2 and analysis of various organic and inorganic compounds. Low detection limits, wide linear ranges and low standard deviations have been achieved. The main reasons behind the superiority of BDD sensors are the chemical stability, wide applicability and resistance of BDD towards biofouling. The beauty of BDD sensing is that it can work for a variety of organic and inorganic compounds under many physicochemical parameters.
