Amperometric Detection of Nitrogen Oxides by Means of Interdigitated Array Electrodes

Abstract: The detection of nitrogen oxides contained in air was investigated using their redox cycles. NO and NO2 gases can be detected by means of interdigitated array (IDA) electrodes made of Au that are fabricated on a gas-permeable membrane. The IDA electrodes were applied to a gas detection system for the first time. Although the membrane is soft and flexible, and has pores, the electrodes can be formed successfully on it by photolithography devised in our laboratory. Between the electrodes, redox cycles are produc… Show more

“…In the first study of gas sensing using IDA electrodes 8 , the reaction system on the electrodes was complicated, because there were many reactions concerned with redox of the analytes (NO x ) and their products, and their standard potentials were similar to one another. In contrast, in this study, the hydrogen-sensing properties of the IDA electrodes were examined, and it was expected that simple redox cycles (Eq.…”

“…8 The amplification rate could be improved dramatically by miniaturizing the IDA electrodes. However, it is difficult to fabricate fine electrode patterns on a flexible and uneven membrane; at least this is the present situation.…”

“…Such IDA electrodes have been applied for electrochemical detection of enzyme activity, [8][9][10][11][12][13] and have also been fabricated on a gas-permeable membrane to produce a gas-sensing system. 17 In the present study, IDA electrodes were incorporated into a flexible device for electrochemical detection in narrow spaces. An epoxy-based negative photoresist (SU-8) was chosen for the flexible substrate because it is a common material with wellknown properties.…”
