Amperometric detection in microchip electrophoresis devices: Effect of electrode material and alignment on analytical performance

Abstract: The fabrication and evaluation of different electrode materials and electrode alignments for microchip electrophoresis with electrochemical (EC) detection is described. The influences of electrode material, both metal and carbon-based, on sensitivity and limits of detection (LOD) were examined. In addition, the effects of working electrode alignment on analytical performance (in terms of peak shape, resolution, sensitivity, and LOD) were directly compared. Using dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and catechol… Show more

“…An additional reservoir, placed 200 µm away from the waste reservoir, and filled with a PDMS "sponge" [40] was used as a decoupler. The decoupler, similar in design to the one reported by Lunte et al [41], was selected to minimize the formation of bubbles in the separation channel and decrease the noise of the detection step [42][43][44].…”

“…However, this article presents electrode materials for general electroactive analytes. Electrode material has a significant impact on the performance of the MCE, and many researchers have focused on this area, in order to achieve more stable and sensitive microchips with higher resolution [4][5][6]. Working electrodes, at which the redox reactions occur, generate the interested signal or data by which ECD of the analytes takes place.…”

“…For these reasons, ED has been an important alternative to LIF detection. Amperometry [35][36][37], conductimetry [38][39][40][41], and potentiometry [42] are the three electrochemical methods employed in combination with MCE.…”
