Amino‐Acid Sequence of Feather Keratin from Fowl

Abstract: The amino acid sequence of a single polypeptide chain, B-4, from fowl feather barbs has been determined. The B-4 chain was found to consist of 96 amino acid residues and to have a molecular weight of 10206 in the S-carboxymethylated form. The N terminus of this protein was an N-acetylserine residue. The B-4 protein contained seven S-carboxymethylcysteine residues, six of which are located in the N-terminal region (residues 1 -26), and other one in C terminus. The central region of the peptide chain was rich in… Show more

“…Table 3 shows the content of free and disulphide bond-forming thiol-containing residues in comparison to all amino acids in the hydrolyzed keratin used in the present study. Usually, feather keratin contains 7% cysteine [29]. Free thiol residues were not detected in the hydrolyzed keratin, but thiol residues from disulphide bonds were present at 18.0 µmol/g.…”

“…os resultados indicaram que os resíduos de cisteína representam em torno de 6 a 8 % do total dos resíduos de aminoácidos, os quais concordam com os valores encontrados na literatura para a queratina da lã [22]. aRai et al [1], trabalhando com queratina extraída de penas encontraram valores de 6,7 % para resíduos de cisteína.…”

“…Amylopectin is soluble, while amylose may crystallize from aqueous solution to form fine particles dispersed in water. Keratin, a protein macromolecule, contains 15% serine and cysteine with hydroxyl amino acids (Arai et al 1983). It has di-sulfide covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds.…”
