Amino acid and energy digestibility of protein sources for growing pigs1,2

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to determine the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA and DE, and to estimate ME and NE of rice protein concentrate, salmon protein hydrolysate, whey protein concentrate, and spray-dried plasma protein. In Exp. 1, 6 barrows (initially 29.5 +/- 2.5 kg of BW) were fitted with ileal T-cannulas and fed each of 5 cornstarch-based diets in a balanced crossover design over 35 d. During a given week, there were either 1 or 2 replications of … Show more

“…In the present study, the CP concentration in FM1 and FM2 e was 779 and 851 g/kg DM (Table 1), respectively; however, the total amount of AA (except for Tyr) was below the corresponding CP concentration amounting to 678 and 745 g/kg DM in FM1 and FM2 e , respectively. Therefore, the CP content in FM1 and FM2 e may have been overestimated in the present study due to a great proportion of non-protein-N compounds in fish meals (Gottlob et al, 2006).…”

“…Both fish meal products like other rendered animal by-products (Gottlob et al, 2006) have greater crude ash contents than plant feed ingredients (Table 1). In the present study, the CP concentration in FM1 and FM2 e was 779 and 851 g/kg DM (Table 1), respectively; however, the total amount of AA (except for Tyr) was below the corresponding CP concentration amounting to 678 and 745 g/kg DM in FM1 and FM2 e , respectively.…”

“…The DE and ME in the basal diet was then divided by 0.97 to calculate the DE and ME in the energy-contributing ingredient according to Gottlob et al (2006). The DE and ME values provided by each sample were calculated by subtracting the DE and ME values provided by the basal energy-contributing ingredients (Adeola, 2001).…”

“…However, apparent (AID) and standardized (SID) ileal digestibility values for CP and AA in yeast extract have not been reported. Digestibility values for AA in SDPP have been reported on a few occasions (Cho et al 1997;Chae et al 1999;Gottlob et al 2006), but these values were measured in growing pigs, and it is not known if they are also representative of values for AID and SID in weanling pigs.
