American cutaneous leishmaniasis associated with degradation of native forest, regardless of economic, social and infrastructure vulnerability

Abstract: American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is a notifiable dermatozoonosis with relevant morbidity. The present study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological aspects of cases of ACL reported in Northern Paraná (2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016), as well as to georeference and analyse the influence of economic, social and environmental variables. Data from ACL notification forms were obtained and the patients' houses were georeferenced.Descriptive statistics, calculations of disease incidenc… Show more

“…Over 95% of the global burden of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has been reported from Central Asia, Mediterranean basin, Middle East and America ( Leishmaniasis Key facts [Internet], 2020 ). Major ecological changes like urbanization, deforestation and other environmental activities are contributed to the global distribution of leishmaniasis ( Leishmaniasis Key facts [Internet], 2020 ; Rachel Tidman et al, 2021 ; Caldart et al, 2021 ). In Ethiopia, the prevalence of leishmaniasis was estimated to be 9.13% ( Haftom et al, 2020 ) and in 2019, about 1665 cases of CL were reported to World Health Organization (WHO) ( Leishmaniasis: status of endemicity of Cutaneous leishmaniasis 2019 [Internet], 2019 ).…”

“…Changes in the environment and landscape may alter the dynamics of vectors and hosts and, consequently, the transmission of etiological agents. As ACL presents a high diversity of causative parasites and vector species, distinct epidemiological profiles may be identified in different regions of Brazil 6 , 7 .…”
