The concept of community cohesion is explored with respect to material requisites and social networks. Community cohesion is held in a delicate balance that various types of social change can upset. Cohesion in the modern community is more vulnerable to negative changes than in its preindustrial counterpart: Affective ties have largely replaced economic bonds, and these are more susceptible to erosion given the mobility and centralization of mass society. Community cohesion is viewed as a valuable human resource which is threatened and merits efforts at preservation by public and private sectors.
