Ameliorative effects of Schisandrin B on Schistosoma mansoni-induced hepatic fibrosis in vivo

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is second only to malaria as the most devastating parasitic disease in the world. It is caused by the helminths Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni), S. haematobium, or S. japonicum. Typically, patients with schistosomiasis suffer from symptoms of liver fibrosis and hepatosplenomegaly. Currently, patients were treated with praziquantel. Although praziquantel effectively kills the worm, it cannot prevent re-infection or resolve liver fibrosis. Also, current treatment options are not ample to complet… Show more

“…Isoflavones including genistein were known to decrease the level of TGF-β, which activates HSCs (Huang et al , 2013). Although many signalling pathways are involved in liver fibrosis, Cong et al (2012) and Lam et al (2021) reported that schisandrin B was effective in ameliorating S. mansoni liver fibrosis through downregulation of TGF-β. BCA acted as an anti-inflammatory agent that regulates TGF-β signalling (Cuiqiong et al , 2020).…”

“…Lignans is the major bioactive constituents found in Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill (Sun, Li, Li, Li, & Piao, 2014), and Scheme B, as one of the most abundant active dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, has been demonstrated to have anti‐apoptotic and anti‐inflammatory effects (Chen et al, 2021; Lam, Liang, & Peng, 2021). A previous study revealed that oral Scheme B exhibits a protective effect against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)‐induced colitis in a mouse model by suppressing MAPK and NF‐κB pathways (Liu et al, 2015).…”

“…The control group (n = 6) was injected with an equivalent volume of olive oil, while the Sch B group was treated with Sch B (20 mg/kg) (n = 6) or Sch B (40 mg/kg) (n = 6) daily via gavage during the CCl 4 period. 17 The Cur group (n = 6) was administered Cur (200 mg/kg) via gavage. After the experiment, mice were euthanized under anesthesia and blood, bone marrow, and liver tissue samples were collected for further analysis.…”
