RÉSUMÉObjectifs: L'objet de cette étude est l'évaluation à court terme de l'opportunité de réduction de l'eau d'arrosage en amendant le sol par un hydrogel ainsi que l'étude de ses effets sur le taux de survie et les paramètres de croissance de jeunes plantules d'arganier dans une parcelle de régénération en climat aride. Méthodologie et résultats : un dispositif expérimental complètement randomisé avec trois répétitions de 33 plants pour chaque traitement : sol amendé en hydrogel et sol témoin. Les plants sur sol témoin ont été arrosés mensuellement et les plants sur sol amendé une fois tous les deux mois. Le traitement n'a pas eu d'effet significatif sur le taux de survie, il a cependant amélioré significativement la croissance en hauteur, le diamètre au collet et l'indice d'élancement des plants sur sol amendé.Conclusions et applications : L'amendement du sol en PSA, malgré la réduction de moitié de la fréquence d'arrosage, a eu un impact positif sur les paramètres de développement des plants d'arganier durant la première campagne tout en gardant des taux de survie similaires. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que l'amendement du sol en hydrogel a permis d'économiser l'eau d'arrosage, de réduire les effets du stress hydrique dans ce périmètre de régénération après la transplantation des plantules d'arganier.Mots-clés: Hydrogel, régénération des écosystèmes, climat aride, stress hydrique, adaptation aux changements climatiques, Argania spinosa.First-year effects of hydrogel on survival and growth of Argania spinosa seedlings in a forest restoration trial in arid climate. The effect of soil amendment with the STOCKOSORB®500 MICRO hydrophilic polymer on the photosynthetic traits in beech seedlings (Fagus sylvatica L.) during 50 days of dehydration was investigated. Dehydration was detected through osmotic potential (Ψ s ) in the assimilatory organs of beech seedlings. The addition of Stockosorb positively affected the CO 2 assimilation rate (A) and instantaneous water use efficiency (A/T), for severely drought-treated seedlings. In comparison with irrigated plants, the values of A of non-irrigated plants with Stockoasorb substrate decreased by 50%, and in non-irrigated plants with common substrate by 88%. The fast kinetics of chlorophyll a fluorescence indicated chronic photoinhibition under drought treatment without Stockosorb, while no significant changes in maximal quantum efficiency (F v /F m ) were recorded under drought treatment with Stockosorb. The actual quantum efficiency of PSII (Φ PSII ) markedly decreased in both treatments -with and without Stockosorb, though significant differences were found only between control treatments and drought treatment without Stockosorb. Moreover, the thermal energy dissipation (NPQ) was strongly limited under severe drought stress. The capacity to down regulate PSII functionality through non-photochemical quenching was maintained under drought treatment with Stockosorb. The results indicate that an amendment with soil conditioner significantly improved the photosynthetic performance of drought-stressed beech seedlings.

Post planting assistance techniques during early ontogeny may be a determining factor for tree survival in stressful habitats. In the eastern region of NW Patagonia, stands of the fast-growing exotic conifers Pinus ponderosa (Ponderosa pine) and Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas fir) are being established in places which are currently, or were in the past, occupied by native Austrocedrus chilensis (mountain cypress) forests. We hypothesize that mitigation techniques could (1) reduce photoinhibition and consequently increase the net photosynthesis rate of plants under high radiation conditions due to increases in the dissipation of radiation with Kaolin, (2) improve water availability in soils using hydrogel, and (3) reduce the effects of chills and frosts events in the species that are most susceptible to environmental stress, A. chilensis and P. menziesii, achieving similar values to those measured in the most resistant species, P. ponderosa using film-forming polymers such as Poly-1-p-Menthene. The short-term responses of seedlings to solar radiation, soil water availability and air temperature were evaluated through gas exchange capacities. Our results indicate that the effects of the different techniques depend on the susceptibility of the species to environmental stress. Kaolin treatment increased stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and transpiration rates in all species. For the hydrogel assay, higher pot volumetric water content was observed in treated plants than in control plants. Pinus ponderosa showed a lower response to the application of hydrogel, while a positive response was observed in A. chilensis and no effect in P. menziesii. The frost mitigation technique evaluated proved unsuitable for the three study species, but appears to work as an anti-desiccant for P. menziesii. In order to optimize the process of planting and establishment for a particular species, the package of techniques needs to be evaluated regarding the requirements and susceptibility to environmental stress of that species.
