AMCIS 2002 Panels and Workshops I: Human-Computer Interaction Research in the MIS Discipline

Abstract: Human Computer Interaction(HCI) or Human Factors studies in MIS are concerned with the ways humans interact with information, technologies, and tasks, especially in business, managerial, organizational, and cultural contexts. This article describes the existence and importance of HCI research in the MIS discipline, its historical development, some of its characteristics, publication opportunities, and future research directions. It is believed that HCI is the subject of a strong research stream in MIS, and wil… Show more

“…For example, individual characteristics are shown in Goodhue and Thompson's (1995) theoretical model, but were not in the model they tested. Finally, individual characteristics bring concerns of traditional HCI research into MIS research (Zhang et al, 2002), e.g., some interfaces provide better fit for experts than novices. Individual characteristics cover many possible constructs, e.g., computer literacy (Goodhue, 1995), experience with particular IT (Guinan et al, 1997;Thompson et al, 1994), experience with technology and with tasks (Dishaw & Strong, 1999;2003), personal innovativeness (Agarwal & Prasad, 1998) and computer playfulness (Agarwal & Prasad, 1998;Webster & Martochhio, 1992), among others.…”

“…HCI research in MIS has almost as long a history as the MIS field. But it is only recently that HCI research is gaining increasing attention in MIS and becoming a focal research stream in the MIS discipline (Zhang et al 2002).…”

“…These issues are usually studied in the business, managerial, organizational and cultural contexts. In summary, 'Human Computer Interaction (HCI) or Human Factors studies in MIS are concerned with the ways humans interact with information, technologies, and tasks, especially in business, managerial, organizational, and cultural contexts' (Zhang et al 2002).…”

“…In the development of information system (IS), the SDLC approach focuses on system functionalities [2] but recently the consideration is changed to user experience [3]. Zhang et al [3] argue that HCI consideration in SDLC is critical, however it was not been emphasized by practitioners.…”
