Ambient temperature and genotype differentially affect developmental and phenotypic plasticity in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: BackgroundGlobal increase in ambient temperatures constitute a significant challenge to wild and cultivated plant species. Forward genetic analyses of individual temperature-responsive traits have resulted in the identification of several signaling and response components. However, a comprehensive knowledge about temperature sensitivity of different developmental stages and the contribution of natural variation is still scarce and fragmented at best.ResultsHere, we systematically analyze thermomorphogenesis th… Show more

“…In plants, RNA-Seq has been used to analyse various environmental-responses. Plants detect environmental changes, such as ambient temperature fluctuations with high sensitivity and subsequently alter their growth and/ or architecture 18,19 . For example a 10% reduction in rice yields and a strong inhibition of lettuce seed germination were caused by an increase of only 1 °C in ambient temperature 20,21 .…”

“…Plants encounter dynamic environmental conditions throughout their life cycles, which results in the expression of more than one phenotype, a phenomenon known as phenotypic plasticity (PP; i.e., the production of more than one phenotype from the same genotype in different environments; ( Kooke et al, 2015 ; Davière and Achard, 2016 ; Ibañez et al, 2017 ). Phenotype is determined by genotype (G) and environmental factors (E) and PP is considered to be an evolutionary adaptation mechanism to changing and uncertain environmental conditions.…”

“…There was little effect on the fresh weight of C24 when increasing the exogenous Suc concentration from 1.5 to 2% (Wang et al 2019). Geographical variation of Col and C24 accessions might have a considerable influence on nutrient uptake or photoperiodic stimulus (Fujimoto et al 2012;Hu et al 2017;Ibañez et al 2017;Miao et al 2018;Stangeland et al 2009;Yang et al 2010).…”
