Amaurosis fugax: the results of arteriography in 59 patients.

Abstract: Fifty-nine patients had arteriography because of episodes of amaurosis fugax. Only one third of them had atherosclerotic lesions potentially treatable by carotid endarterectomy. Another third had normal arteriograms, some of these had migraine, heart disease or platelet disorders presumed to be the cause of their symptoms. Patients with amaurosis fugax are a heterogeneous group, and their visual symptoms should not be considered a specific indicator of stenosis of the internal carotid artery.

“…The prevalence of ECS in our study (17.1%) was lower than that in white populations. 2,3,5 In contrast to previous study, 3,4 altitudinal/lateralized visual loss and an onset speed of seconds did not occur more frequently in our ICA-stenosis group. Positive visual phenomena, which were considered as benign, were not rare in our ICA-stenosis group.…”

“…According to a previous study, the prevalence of ophthalmic artery stenosis is approximately 2% of patients suffering from TMB [7] . There are two prevailing theories about TMB and ophthalmic artery stenosis.…”

“…Patients with amaurosis fugax investigated by angiography were recently reviewed by Adams et al, 4 who did not find any example of AVM among 59 patients from a personal series and a total of 751 from the literature, suggesting that TMB is very rarely associated with AVM's. Although Walsh and Hoyt 3 mention this association, we were able to find only one documented case of TMB in the literature, 2 related to an intracerebral AVM.…”
