Aluminum nitride. Preparation methods

Abstract: Russian and overseas sources published in the last twenty years for aluminum nitride preparation methods are studied. Both basic and relatively simple technology, as well as atypical innovative procedures, are analyzed, making it possible to form a complete picture of aluminum nitride preparation methods within the world.

“…In accordance with the data obtained in [13], the temperature dependence of the pressure of aluminum monofluoride and aluminum trifluoride is represented by the following equations: lgP (AlF 3 ) = 13.729 -1290/T, (5) lgP (AlF) = 10.952 -11800/T,…”

“…The presence of even a small amount of oxygen in the material significantly reduces its thermal conductivity (the most important property of aluminum nitride) due to the formation of oxides and oxynitrides on the surface of the grains. The articles [4,5] presented a detailed survey of the methods used to obtain aluminum nitride and discussed each method's positive and negative aspects. For example, powders obtained by industrial methods -carbothermic reduction and direct nitriding -are not very pure.…”

“…The existence of this kind of c-Al 2 O 3 , which can be a calcinated product of hydrogenated boehmite as expressed in Eq. 4 [35], suggests that the as-received AlN was partially hydrolysed before a calcination process during the manufacturing process, but we cannot rule out the presence of c-Al 2 O 3 from the AlN synthesis process [33]. No obvious features of Al(OH) 3 crystal structure can be found in XRD patterns, which indicate the hydrolysation of the as-received AlN is in a favourable condition in terms of the hydrolysis issue.…”

“…A following dehydration process (calcination) of the surface-hydrolysed AlN is reported to form an alumina shell and hinder further hydrolysis [32], and a similar calcination process can be found in many AlN synthesis methods as the last step, e.g. the carbon residue will need to be burnt off at 700°C in a carbothermal synthesis method [33]. Therefore, as illustrated in Eqs.…”
