Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a widely used building material for masonry blocks. Its porous structure and mineral composition lead to low thermal conductivity and fire resistance. European AAC production and usage strongly increased in the 1960s and 1970s. Therefore, assuming limited buildings’ lifetimes, significant post-demolition AAC volumes can be expected in the following decades. However, post-demolition AAC recycling in high-value environmentally friendly applications is still to be established as most post-demolition AAC is currently landfilled. Different recycling options for post-demolition AAC are presently being researched. However, a recycling network to implement these options is neither designed nor established. This contribution focuses on creating a European recycling network, including mathematical modelling, data acquisition, and solving the model. i.e. minimising the total costs. The mathematical modelling uses a capacitated warehouse location problem with multi-sourcing and direct delivery. Results show that recycling plants of smaller capacity (100,000 t input/a) are placed in the recycling networks in 2020 and 2025. With higher waste quantities being expected from 2030 onwards, plants with a larger capacity (200,000 t input/a) are added, especially in Poland, where the highest pd-AAC amount in Europe is expected. The recycling network shows a decentralised structure with numerous recycling plants to keep transport costs low. Most network costs result from variable processing costs, showing the highest cost increases from 2020 to 2050. Fixed costs increase with the higher number of recycling plants and account for the second-largest share of total network costs. Transport costs are comparatively low thanks to the decentralised structure of the network. Overall, waste generation is expected to increase by 226% from 2020 to 2050, while the total costs of the recycling network are expected to rise by 151% only. The results support decision-makers in fostering recycling and implementing a circular economy for post-demolition AAC.

KurzfassungDer beschlossene Ausstieg aus der Kohleverstromung führt in Deutschland zu einer Verknappung von technischem Gips. Um den Gipsbedarf dennoch decken zu können, müssen Alternativen geschaffen werden. Das vorliegende Forschungsvorhaben verfolgt daher das Ziel, sulfatisch gebundene Mörtel unter Verwendung von Porenbetonrezyklaten (PBR) zur Herstellung von Bauprodukten in Anlehnung an gängige Gipsbaustoffe zu entwickeln und zu erproben. Gipsgehalte sollen durch Porenbeton, einem vermehrt im Bauschutt anfallenden Material, das üblicherweise aussortiert und beseitigt wird, substituiert werden.Die bisherigen Untersuchungsergebnisse belegen die grundlegende Machbarkeit des Ansatzes. Die Eigenschaften der untersuchten Mörtel lassen erwarten, dass selbst bei einer Substitution von bis zu 50 Ma.‐% des Gipsgehalts durch PBR die Herstellung von Gipsprodukten möglich ist.

Der Gebäude‐ und Bausektor ist für einen erheblichen Teil der europäischen Treibhausgasemissionen verantwortlich. Diese Roadmap beschreibt, wie die europäische Porenbetonindustrie bis zum Jahr 2050 klimaneutral werden kann. Mit seiner Eigenschaft, als CO2‐Senke zu fungieren, hat Porenbeton – über Klimaneutralität hinaus – das Potenzial, CO2‐negativ zu werden. Das bedeutet, dass dieser Baustoff in seinem Lebenszyklus der Atmosphäre mehr Kohlenstoff entzieht, als bei Herstellung, Transport, Nutzung und Nachnutzung freigesetzt wurde. Die Szenarioentwicklung für das Jahr 2050 erfolgte auf Basis technischer Maßnahmen zur Effizienzoptimierung, der Umstellung von fossilen auf erneuerbare Energieträger sowie einer aktuellen Lebenszyklusanalyse für ein repräsentatives Porenbetonprodukt. Der überwiegende Anteil der CO2‐Emissionen im Lebenszyklus von Porenbeton entsteht nicht in der Produktion von Porenbeton selbst, sondern bei der Herstellung der Ausgangsstoffe Zement und Kalk. Aus diesem Grund orientiert sich die vorliegende Roadmap eng an den Dekarbonisierungspfaden europäischer Herstellerverbände der Zement‐ und Kalkindustrie. Mit dieser Roadmap verpflichten sich der Europäische Porenbetonverband (European Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Association, EAACA) und seine Mitglieder zur Erreichung der CO2‐Neutralität ihrer Produkte und zur Unterstützung bei der Verwirklichung eines klimaneutralen Europas.
