The purpose of this study is to compare five protocols of estrous synchronization for Hu ewes to obtain the most effective and economical protocol, to apply the advantageous scheme in large-scale sheep farming. Healthy multiparous Hu ewes (n = 150) were randomly divided into five groups, and all ewes were administered fluorogestone acetate (FGA, 45 mg) vaginal sponge. The sponges of the first three groups (Groups I, II, and III) were removed on the 11th day, and 0.1 mg of PGF2α was injected intramuscularly on the ninth day. Group I received 6 μg of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by intramuscular injection at 36th h after withdrawal of the sponge. Group II was injected 330 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the ninth day. The combination of 6 μg of GnRH and 330 IU of PMSG was treated in Group III at the same time as Group I and Group II. The sponges of the latter two groups (Groups IV and V) were removed on the 13th day, and 330 IU of PMSG was injected intramuscularly simultaneously. PGF2α (0.1 mg) was administered on the 12th day in Group IV. All ewes were detected for estrus at 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h after the sponge removal. The loss of sponge and vaginitis was recorded when the sponge was withdrawn. Cervical artificial insemination (AI) was performed with fresh semen of Dorper rams diluted with skimmed milk. After 30 days of insemination, the conception was detected with a veterinary B-ultrasound scanner. The lambing status of all ewes and the cost of drugs for estrous synchronization in each group were recorded. The results showed the following: (1) on the whole, the average percentage of estrous ewes in the period of 24–36 h and 36–48 h after removal was significantly higher than other three periods and that of the period of 60–72 h was significantly lower than the first three periods after removal; (2) there was no significant difference in percentages of estrous ewes in any of the five time periods, sponge loss rate, vaginitis rate, total percentage of estrous ewes, conception rate, single lambing rate, twinning rate, and multiple lambing rate of ewes among five protocols; (3) total percentage of estrous ewes and conception rate were more than or equal to 80% in the Groups II and III, and the twinning lamb rate of the Group II protocol was 70%; (4) there was no difference in lambing rate of ewes among Groups II, III, IV, and V; (5) the Group III had the highest drug cost of 22.5 CNY. In conclusion, considering the lambing rate, twinning lamb rate, and drug cost for estrous synchronization, Group II was the most advisable for application and promotion in large-scale sheep farms among these five protocols of estrus synchronization.

Social hierarchies among animal species are based on the animal ́s dominance-aggressiveness level aligned with the subordination oftheir mates. Social order is mostly defined by animal size, live weight, or age. This study aimed to evaluate the association betweenodor score (OS), horn presence (HP), horn size (HS), and body temperature on social rank hierarchy, scrotal circumference (SC), semenquality (SQ), and sexual drive (SD). Adult Dorper rams (n=24) with similar live weight (LW), body condition score (BCS), and age (AG)were subjected to a behavioral test to define a success index (SI) based on male-to-male interactions. OS was highest (P<0.05) for ramswith high social rank (HSR; 2.5±0.4) and lowest for rams with low social status (LSR; 0.75±0.01). Scrotal circumference was highest(P<0.05) for HSR rams (40.0±3.5) and lowest for rams with medium social rank (MSR; 29.3±1.20). Sperm cell concentration/mL washighest (P<0.05) for HSR rams (3848±187) and lowest for LSR (2660±463). 80% of the HSR rams had horns, while 33.3 of the LSRrams were hornless. The percentage of rejection to mount an estrous ewe was 77.7 for LSR and 20% for HSR and MSR rams (P <0.05).To conclude, the HSR rams presented the highest successful copulation, scrotal circumference, and sperm cell concentration comparedto rams with lesser social rank scores

Contents The dairy goat industry is of great economic importance to certain rural areas of the European Union (EU), especially the Mediterranean region. Its sustainability, however, is severely affected by the seasonality of goat reproduction, which leads to fluctuations in the availability of final products. Classical hormone treatments based on progestagens and eCG are the main tools employed in the effort to achieve fertility outside of the normal breeding season. They are also used to induce and synchronize oestrus and ovulation in artificial insemination programs. The food safety policy of the EU is becoming ever stricter with regard to the use of hormonal treatments for reproductive purposes, pushing livestock‐raising towards ever cleaner and greener production systems. Recent advances in the use of natural methods able to generate endocrine signals that induce the ovulatory process have improved our capacity to foster reproduction in the non‐breeding season. When used in a fashion appropriate for the latitude at which animals live, their breed, and the management system under which they are raised, environmental (photoperiod), nutritional and sociosexual (the male effect) signals offer alternatives to classic hormonal techniques. This affords the fragile and heterogeneous goat production sector with new opportunities. This article describes the most representative advances made in the use of the male effect as a natural method of inducing ovulation during seasonal anoestrus. Its association with other methods for optimizing responses and synchronizing induced ovulation is also discussed; such associations allow it to be used as an alternative to hormonal treatment in artificial insemination programs.
