Alternative Perspectives on Impact: The Potential of ALMs and Altmetrics to Inform Funders about Research Impact

Abstract: More evidence of the meaning and validity of ALMs and altmetrics, coupled with greater consistency and transparency in their presentation, would enable research funders to explore their potential value and identify appropriate use cases.

“…Eighty-nine percent of the Scientists indicated they were not aware/using them and only one person indicated they had heard of them, but were not using them. As this area has generated more discussion and exposure across all the disciplines in the time since the interviews were conducted in 2012 and 2013 (e.g., Thelwall et al 2013;Dinsmore, Allen &Dolby, 2014 andHtoo andNa, 2017), it is postulated by the authors that this area is one where the responses might be substantially different were the interviews repeated.…”

“…Altmetrics are said to complement traditional bibliometric indicators rather than act as an alternative as often the metrics used, usually social web coverage, are not prevalent enough to be used as sole indicator of article impact and use [19]. However, they can give an early indication of uptake of research (through social media stats) [18] and are particularly useful for early career researchers who do not have a large body of work [18] and have not been cited by high numbers of other researchers.…”

“…One of these new measures' attractive features is their speed. Traditional citations may take years to yield measurable impact, while altmetrics can theoretically reveal impact in weeks, days, or even minutes (Brown, 2014;Dinsmore, Allen, & Dolby, 2014;Lapinski, Piwowar, & Priem, 2013;. Also important is the possibility of measuring a broader scope of materials and "products" in addition to traditional manuscripts (Bornmann, 2014(Bornmann, , 2015Herther, 2013;Howard, 2015;Lapinski et al, 2013;.…”
