Alternative Approaches to Measurement of Ground Vibrations Due to the Vibratory Roller: A Pilot Study

Abstract: At present, one of the primary tasks of the construction industry is to build transport infrastructure. This concerns both the construction of new bypasses of towns and the repair of existing roads, which are damaged by congestion, especially by freight transport. Whether it is a new building or a reconstruction, it is always very important to choose a suitable method of subsoil treatment. One of the most commonly used methods for soil treatment is currently compaction using vibratory rollers. This method is v… Show more

“…Two BRS32 seismic stations, see Figure 1 , were used as the reference instrument at two sites: these had also been used by the authors in previous studies aimed at comparing results obtained from alternative approaches to vibration measurement [ 1 , 6 , 8 ]. The special mobile compact datalogger had originally been developed for the Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the CAS of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v.v.i.…”

“…As a result, the pilot studies provide a good starting point for the further deployment of these alternative devices. Other achievements include the measurement of vibration during landform compaction with a vibratory roller [ 8 ], the study of harmonic vibration in comparative measurements of alternative equipment and instrumentation for seismic monitoring [ 9 ], and research on vibration associated with works and construction technologies in brownfield areas [ 10 ]. Last but not least, the authors presented a description of new methods for seismic monitoring, namely a laboratory comparison of fiber-optic sensors with pneumatic measurement systems [ 1 ].…”

“…In automobile inspection, noncontact-type measurement plays an important role [3][4][5][6]. According to the structure and working principle of an engine, the traditional noncontact-type measurement is based on the inherent relationship between the frequency of vibration and rotation speed.…”

“…Three major issues are related to the structural health monitoring of buildings, underground structures and other civil engineering structures in the case of dynamic excitation (traffic load or geotechnical works) [1][2][3][4]. The first issue is directly related to vibration sensors (accelerometers, interferometric sensors, and fibre optic sensors) and their sensitivity and applicability [2].…”

“…Three major issues are related to the structural health monitoring of buildings, underground structures and other civil engineering structures in the case of dynamic excitation (traffic load or geotechnical works) [1][2][3][4]. The first issue is directly related to vibration sensors (accelerometers, interferometric sensors, and fibre optic sensors) and their sensitivity and applicability [2]. The second, not yet sufficiently analysed issue, relates to the sensor layout [5][6][7], data transmission [8] and ability to process the recorded signals in real time (as imposed vibrations can cause serious damage to the monitored structures [9]).…”
