Colombia has great potential to produce clean energy through the use of residual biomass from the agricultural sector, such as residues obtained from the life cycle of rice production. This document presents a mixed approach methodology study to examine the combustion of rice husks as a possible energy alternative in the Tolima department of Colombia. First, the physicochemical characteristics of the rice husk were analyzed to characterize the raw material. Next, System Advisor Model (SAM) software was used to model a bioenergy plant to obtain biochar, bio-oil, and biogas from the combustion of rice husks and generate performance matrices, such as thermal efficiency, heat rate, and capacity factor. Then, the project was evaluated for financial feasibility using a mathematical model of net present value (NPV) with a planning horizon of 5 years. Finally, a subset of the local population was surveyed to assess perspectives on the project in the region. The results of the rice husk physicochemical analysis were the following: nitrogen content (0.74%), organic carbon (38.04%), silica (18.39%), humidity determination (7.68%), ash (19.4%), presence of carbonates (< 0.01%), and pH (6.41). These properties are adequate for the combustion process. The SAM simulation showed that the heat transferred in the boiler was 3180 kW, maintaining an efficiency between 50 and 52% throughout the 12 months of the year, meaning that the rice husk can generate electricity and thermal energy. The financial analysis showed that the internal rate of return (IRR) was 6% higher than the opportunity interest rate (OIR), demonstrating economic feasibility of the project. The design and creation of a rice husk processing plant is socially and environmentally viable and has the potential to contribute to the economic development of the Tolima community and reduce greenhouse gases. Likewise, this activity has the potential to promote energy security for consumers and environmental sustainability while at the same time being economically competitive.

Gold mining in the Santurban Paramo in Colombia contributes to the development and growth of the region by generating employment and income for the inhabitants. However, the benefits of this activity may be offset by the use of mercury in the amalgamation stage of gold production. Mercury is a heavy metal that is highly toxic and harmful to the health of people who are directly or indirectly involved in gold mining and causes damage to the environment, such as deterioration of vegetation cover, harmful effects to flora and fauna in the Paramo, disappearance of endemic species, and reduced quality of natural resources (water, soil, and air). This research seeks to analyze the different environmental impacts and risks of inadequate handling of mercury in gold mining. To do so, the mining activity process and the area of influence were first characterized and evaluated. Next, soil and air mercury concentrations were measured in the mining areas considered under this study. In the municipalities of California and Surata in the Santurban Paramo, values between 160– 226 g/t of mercury were measured in the production plants. Finally, the environmental impacts were evaluated with the help of an environmental risk matrix, obtaining higher risk indexes in natural resource quality and effects on flora and fauna of the Santurban Paramo.

Capacidad emulsificante y estabilidad de emulsiones de harinas de cascarilla de arroz (Oryza sativa) bajo diferentes condiciones de pH y fueza iónica

Aunque el contenido de proteína en la cascarilla de arroz es mínimo, estas proteínas en conjunto con su contenido de fibra representado en celulosa, hemicelulosa y lignina podrían tener interesantes propiedades tecno-funcionales para la agroindustria alimentaria y no alimentaria. Se obtiene harina de cascarilla de arroz (Oryza sativa L.) y se evalua su capacidad emulsificante (CE) y la estabilidad de la emulsión (EE). La CE se evalua a dos tamaños de partícula (>250 y <250 μm), tres pH (5.5; 2.5 y 1.5) y tres fuerzas iónicas (0, 0.2 y 0.5 M de NaCl). En la EE se evalua a las mismas condiciones y además se evalua el efecto de la temperatura (50 y 80 °C). Se encuentra que la harina de cascarilla de arroz a tamaño de partícula >250, pH de 5.5, y fuerza iónica de 0.5 M de NaCl presenta la mejor CE (3.3 ± 0.03 mL/g). La menor CE (1.5 ± 0.0 mL/g) se obtiene a un tamaño de partícula < 250 μm, pH 1.5 y fuerza iónica de 0.5 M de NaCl. La mayor EE (47.2 ± 0.03 % ) se obtiene a 50 °C, tamaño de partícula > 250 μm, pH 5.5, y fuerza iónica de 0.2 M de NaCl. Se comprueba que la harina de cascarilla de arroz tiene propiedades emulsificantes y estas propiedades se ven influenciadas por factores extrínsecos como el tamaño de partícula, el pH, la fuerza iónica, y la temperatura. Lo anterior indica que la harina de cascarilla de arroz es una alternativa al uso de emulsificantes de origen animal, por lo cual podría utilizarse muy particularmente en preparaciones veganas, donde su contenido en sílice debe revisarse, pero además podría utilizarse en la elaboración de estructuras donde las propiedades emulsificantes son importantes, como lo son las industrias cosmética y de bloques de concreto, por ejemplo.
