Alternate cyclopolymer of diallylglutamic acid and sulfur dioxide

Abstract: The alternate cyclocopolymerization of a glutamic acid-based monomer and SO2led to a pH-responsive polydianionic electrolyte (PDE) which is used to construct a recyclable aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) and found to be an effective antiscalant.

“…tions mentioned above, the obtained copolymers showed a 1/1 molar ratio of the monomeric units. Further study revealed that this protocol could be directly extended to unsubstituted 1,6-heptadiene derivatives [93][94][95] and a series of diallyl quaternary ammonium, [96][97][98][99][100][101] providing a facile route to functional cationic or zwitterionic copolymers (Fig. 12).…”

“…Copolymers of monomer 126 /SO 2 led to water‐insoluble PZ 132 , [83] which demonstrated modest antiscalant activity against CaSO 4 scaling (Scheme 20). An ATPS was created employing water‐soluble 134 and PEG for possible biomolecule separation and purification.…”

“…Millions of pounds of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), alone accounting for over 1000 patents and publications, are produced annually for various applications, including water treatment 1 . Judicious choice of the substituents (R 1 , R 2 ) in the DAA salts has led to the incorporation of anionic, zwitterionic (±) and ampholytic (+ −) charges on the pH‐responsive polymer backbone 7,8 . Copolymerization of DAA salts with sulfur dioxide 9 or maleic acid (MA) 10,11 invariably leads to alternate copolymers as a result of each monomeric pairs having reactivity ratios of zeros (i.e., r 1 ≈ 0, r 2 ≈ 0) 10 …”
